I am constantly in awe of the wonderful stories and memories that are shared with me when I visit families.

Family history is rich and full of incredible tales.

My late grandfather (Herbert ‘Son’ Salter), acquired a diary many years ago.

It charts the voyage of a man who sailed from Wales in 1900 aboard a Coal ship.

I have started to embark on the mammoth task of transcribing the beautiful writing before the diary becomes too frail.

Sadly, there are a few pages missing and the name of the traveller is lost to history.

I was deeply honoured to attend Monday’s commemoration of our local martyrs. Beautifully organised by the Heathfield & District Bonfire Society at the Heathfield Chapel on Cade Street.

It was a moving reflection on a dark chapter of our local history.

The service commemorated two locals Margery Morris and her son James, both from Heathfield, who during persecutions under Queen Mary I, they refused to renounce their faith, standing firm in their choice to practice their religion using the English Bible rather than the Latin mass.

They were hunted down, taken to Lewes, and locked in the vaults of the Star Inn - where Lewes Town Hall stands today.

On the 22nd of June 1557, they were brought out into the town square and burned at the stake.

In total, seventeen brave souls - the Sussex Martyrs, lost their lives in the same grisly way between 1555 and 1557.

Their principles and incredible courage remain just as relevant today and thanks to the Heathfield & District Bonfire Society, their memory will never be forgotten.

A change of scenery today, at Shamley Green Natural burial ground.

An empty unloved piece of land 20+ years ago, and now a beautiful and tranquil place where over 2,000 trees now mark where many people have found their resting place.

I have posted alot about 'fuss-free' or direct cremations.

If this is the path that you wish to follow, speak to your local, trusted, independent funeral director.

Choosing a family-run professional in your own community ensures that your loved one stays local, is treated with absolute dignity, and that you receive the face-to-face, compassionate guidance that national, corporate providers simply cannot replicate.

With a local, established funeral director, there are so many more options available to you - and their advice is free!

Take a look at how to ensure a simple farewell is still a proper farewell..."

I’m often asked what the difference is between a minister and a celebrant.

A minister (clergy member, priest, pastor, rabbi) usually leads traditional, faith-based ceremonies adhering to specific religious doctrines.

Whereas a celebrant is a professional who creates personalised, bespoke ceremonies that can be entirely non-religious or incorporate spiritual elements.

The focus of a celebrant is entirely on the person who the service is for - not just a brief synopsis of their life, but a rich and colourful life story that is unique, personal and completely bespoke.

A good celebrant does not ‘copy & paste’ a service, but spends hours researching, listening and writing a service.

We never take for granted the trust that a family invests in us at such a difficult time and take great pride in the service that we provide.
