Six years ago today, we opened the doors to Mandira’s Kitchen.
Here are four pictures from the first day. From our brave first customers, the very first lady who bought a jar of our only chutney (tamarind, of course!), our superstar junior team who ran every event and Sarah giving us our very first till training when it finally arrived!
We’re still here, still smiling, and still welcoming you with open arms.
It’s been an amazing adventure so far and the best is yet to come.
Hope to see you - open every day from. 10 to 5. (And 6 pm on Saturdays !)

Sir John Boorman, our charming regular is 92 and still as dashing as ever.

Every time he visits, I remind him how, as teens, we’d huddle under the covers for our video horror nights, watching Deliverance and Excalibur, equal parts terrified and awestruck. He always laughs and asks me to hold his hand.

Legends like him age like fine wine, and still come by for curry..

It’s National Tea Day and so I thought I’d tell you about my Tea connection.. 👇👇I consider myself a true “Tea child.” Apart from being born in “tea”, I am probably one of those few people whose grandfather (I was 3 in this picture with him) was a tea planter, whose parents met and fell in love on a tea estate and were actually married in tea . And so the groom, bride, best man, wedding, honeymoon, children etc etc all were from tea!!! I have had three proper homes in tea - parents, grandparents and Mama ( maternal uncle) all being tea planters in addition to many many friends who are still connected to tea. Those emerald camellia sinensis bushes to me are my happy place but three more facts …My parents and most of their tea friends would never dream of having a cup of “masala chai” - their tea is brewed with clinical precision and served from a beautiful tea pot and drunk from China cups. I rarely drink tea and my mother says I make the worst cup of tea!!!! The MK team does make good tea though..

It’s wedding season at MK and as I sit down planning menus with numerous lovely brides, I found myself looking back…

One photo from 33 years ago – mine, and one from over 56 years ago – my parents’. Both still going strong. Arguments, laughter, good and bad days – all of it. Someone once told me,
“The day you get married should be the day you love each other the least. Because from there, love should only grow.” So here is to building love, one day (and one meal) at a time.

Sunday Alu Tarkari

There are so many versions of “alur tarkari” on the streets of Calcutta. Each one with its own character. The original Bengali “shada alu” one is a quiet sort of dish. Just ginger, kalojire, green chilli, no turmeric or spice - just salt and a pinch of sugar. No tomatoes, no garam masala. Just simplicity abd accompanied with fluffy white luchis..

At home though, we were not a luchi family but more of a toast and cheese and bacon and sausage kind of household. Luchi just didn’t fit in. My mother had no idea how to make it, and it wasn’t part of our daily menu. The only time luchi made an appearance was when we visited my grandmother. She would make them hot and puffed which we would eat with the Torkari - the last luchi was always had with chini or crunchy sugar .

But when we moved to Calcutta, Sundays took on a new flavour. Dad would head out early for his weekly market run, and on his way back, would stop at Gupta Brothers. That’s when the greasy paper packets of kochuri and alu tarkari would arrive. The tarkari had skin on potatoes, slightly crushed, with tiny edges that clung to your fingers. It was simple and very delicious.

This morning I tried to recreate that Gupta Brothers magic. I used fresh new potatoes because it would have been a shame not to. A pinch of hing, some ginger, and yes, just a touch of tomato crept in because I had one past its sell by date in the fridge. Not quite like Gupta’s , but close enough.!
