Meet the Lockwood Studios Artist:

Louise Burnett

Painter

Louise Burnett is a British artist celebrated for her atmospheric landscapes and seascapes, inspired by the ever-changing skies and natural beauty of her local surroundings. Her work has been exhibited in prestigious venues including the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition and The Mall Galleries, London, and is held in private collections worldwide.

Louise’s fascination with light and sky is central to her practice. Her compositions often begin at the source of light, evolving organically through layers of colour and texture. With low horizons and a subtle interplay of atmosphere, her paintings evoke a strong sense of place and emotional resonance. She embraces a subliminal approach to storytelling, allowing each piece to develop its own narrative through unexpected results and intuitive mark-making. Her creative process begins outdoors, with quick A5 sketches, watercolours, and photographs taken during walks. These impressions are brought back to her studio, which is filled with clippings, images, and visual notes that serve as the starting point for new work. Her paintings emerge slowly, built up in layers until they come to life.

Louise studied Fine Art and Printmaking at West Surrey College of Art and Design (now part of the Surrey Institute of Art & Design UCLA), earning her BA in 1983, following a Foundation Diploma at Epsom College of Art and Design. Her early recognition includes the Wiggans Teape Paper Company Print Prize and the Student Print Prize at West Surrey College.

The heatwave continues, and the wildfire risk is high.
Wildfires don’t just burn land – they destroy wildlife habitats, endanger animals and people, and can take days to bring under control.
While you’re out in the sunshine...
Taking a disposable BBQ? Big no! Swap for a picnic.
That bonfire? Please avoid.
Glass bottles? Keep out of direct sunlight.
Share this post or tag a friend who’s heading out.
Thank you for keeping .

Meet the Lockwood Studios Artist:

Nathalie Joel

Glass Artist and Educator

Living in different countries has shaped the way I see the world. A deep love of discovering cultures, traditions, and landscapes sits at the heart of my creative practice. I draw inspiration from travel, from observation, and from the people I meet along the way. Glass is my chosen medium, and I approach it without fear, embracing experimentation and discovery.

My relationship with glass has unfolded over 25 years. It began with traditional leading and painting using enamels and silver stains, before expanding into copper foiling and lamp making through the Tiffany technique, and later into fusing. Each process has added a new layer to my practice.

My work continues to evolve through an unorthodox combination of techniques. This constant exploration fuels my curiosity and allows me to create one-off pieces with character and individuality. It also sustains my passion for teaching, which was my original formal training many years ago.

I recently opened a teaching studio at Lockwood Studios in Guildford. Here, I run small-group workshops, including introductions to stained glass, garden art, and bespoke projects. I also host regular sessions for hobbyists, where we freely explore multiple techniques whilst fostering an open, creative, and friendly environment. Alongside my studio and teaching practice, I work on commissioned domestic installations.
