Join us at Grimsby Town Hall on Friday 18th September and Saturday 19th September (10am – 4pm) for a free exhibition on the religious architecture of North East Lincolnshire. The exhibition will include photographs, documents and artefacts relating to the area’s monastic houses, Anglican churches, and nonconformist chapels. Some of the region’s lost churches and chapels will also feature, including Grimsby’s Baptist Tabernacle, St Stephen’s Church (Roberts Street), St Paul’s Church (West Marsh), and Trinity Methodist Church (Cleethorpes).

The exhibition will also tell the fascinating story of Grimsby’s synagogue, which first opened for worship in 1888. This part of the display will also shed light on the lives of Jewish people in the town, their service in both World Wars, and the businesses they established, which played an important part in Grimsby’s development from the late 19th century onwards.

Between 1968 and 1989 the now defunct Abbey Records made a series of 28 recordings entitled “In Quires and Places….” Many of the recordings were of cathedral choirs, but some parish church choirs were also included in the series. The recording at St James’ was released in 1970. The organist was Terence Allbright. You can listen to the recording on You Tube:
