Meet Bella, who has grown up surrounded by the magic of Gretna Green weddings.

Her mum, Danielle, is one of our wonderful Wedding Hosts, and it’s clear Bella has inherited her love for what we do. When asked what she wants to be when she grows up, her answer is always the same: “Help Mummy do weddings at Gretna Green.”

It’s lovely to see the next generation already feeling part of the Gretna Green story.

Why do couples choose Gretna Green today?
For some it is the history, a place where weddings have taken place for over 270 years.
For others it is the romance, following in the footsteps of those who came before.
And for many it is simply a feeling, that moment when they arrive and think, “This is it.”
One bride told us:
“We didn’t just want a venue that hosts weddings. We wanted somewhere with its own story, a place that has seen so much love. Gretna Green felt right.”
Why did you choose Gretna Green?

A blind date that wasn’t even hers. That’s how Maria met Steve on 17 September 1974. After a row with her mum, she went to her friend’s house, only to find her heading out to meet a boy called Steve. Maria went along, and the moment she saw him, she knew.

They didn’t have much back then. Steve even sold his beloved sports car so Maria could buy her wedding dress. They married quietly with a special licence, with only Steve’s parents and sister there to witness it. People said it wouldn’t last two years.

But here they are, 50 years later. Two children, four grandchildren and a lifetime of adventures behind them. There have been bumps in the road, but they’ve kept every promise they made - to love, honour and stand by each other in sickness and in health.

To celebrate their golden anniversary, Maria and Steve came to Gretna Green for a handfasting ceremony, renewing their vows in a place that has been part of so many love stories. A perfect way to honour the journey they’ve shared and the love that still holds them together today. ❤️

💕Every tradition we see at Gretna Green carries its own story. Handfasting cords entwine two hands, binding not only fingers but futures. The quaich offers that first shared sip, a promise of unity and trust. Bagpipes lead the way, each note echoing centuries of Scottish pride. These are part of Scotland’s wedding heritage, often woven into ceremonies here at Gretna Green.

Did you have any of these traditions on your wedding day?😌

In 1754, England rewrote the rules. The Marriage Act demanded anyone under 21 get parental permission to wed, crushing the hopes of couples who knew it would never be granted.

But just across the Scottish border, the law held no power. Here, two people could marry in an instant, simply by declaring their vows before witnesses. No permission. No delay. No turning back.
In 1754, England rewrote the rules. The Marriage Act demanded that anyone under 21 get parental permission to wed, crushing the hopes of couples who knew it would never be granted.
And so began Gretna Green’s runaway legend, the place where love crossed the line and won.
