Originally instigated by the late visionary, Gretna Green Groups, landowner & friend the late Alasdair Houston. Tourist attraction, The Star of Caledonia is set ✨️ to come to Gretna Green 💚
The Star of Caledonia, is a planned Landmark near the Scottish Border. It is a sculpture designed by Cecil Balmond and Charles Jencks. It is hoped that the sculpture will attract visitors, boosting tourism, and result in social and economic benefits to the area, as about 84% of all visitors to Scotland by road pass near Gretna.
Estimates of the height of the sculpture range from 40 metres to 55 metres projected to be twice the size of the Angel of the North. The design is meant to pay homage to innovation within Scotland and be inspired by inventors and innovators, in particular prominent Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell, who was famous for his work in electromagnetic theory.
The sculpture is to be in a star shape and to be made of galvanised steel and illuminated at night at its tips using "subtle lighting". The lights will be using LEDs.
The sculpture intends to pull together the surrounding hills, the adjacent site and the Solway. The Gretna Landmark Trust have said that the sculpture's aim was to be "visually spectacular but meaningful, relating strongly to place and identity". It will be visible from the nearby motorway A74 (M) & turn the crossing of the Border into Scotland memorable experience. Add your thoughts about the Star of Caledonia.
Plans to create the multi-million pound Star of Caledonia at Gretna Green are expected to be approved today.
