There aren’t many times you’ll see traditional funeral letter tributes leave my workshop.
I’ve always been drawn to a more natural, country garden style. Flowers that feel as though they’ve been gathered from the meadows, created without floral foam and plastic, and designed to gently return to the earth when their job is done.
But for this very special mum, I wanted to create something her youngest son could instantly read, recognise and connect with. Something bright, joyful and full of the colours of an abundant summer garden, just like the beautiful, vibrant lady she was.
Rather than using plastic foam, I built each letter from chicken wire, filled it with moss gathered from our own woodland to hold moisture and keep the flowers fresh, then carefully secured the structure to a simple wooden frame. It was definitely a bit of trial and error (and I’ve already got ideas for making the structure better and more hidden next time!), but that’s one of the things I love most about bespoke funeral work, every tribute teaches me something new.
Creating farewell flowers is never just about flowers. It’s about telling a story, honouring a life and providing families with a moment of joy on their darkest days.
