More and more Couples‑to‑Be are choosing Handfasting as part of their ceremony — and it’s easy to see why.

Handfasting is an ancient Celtic ritual where a couple’s hands are gently bound with ribbons, cords, or meaningful fabrics to symbolise their union. It’s actually where the phrase “tying the knot” comes from.

How Handfasting Works

The Binding
The couple joins hands — often left over right — while the celebrant (or chosen guests) wrap the cords or ribbons around their hands.

Vows & Meaning
As the binding takes place, the couple share vows or promises. The materials used can be deeply personal: tartan, ribbon, lace, or even fabric from a family gown.

The Knot
Once the vows are spoken, the couple gently pull their hands free, leaving a knot in the cord — a lasting symbol of their commitment and the life they’re choosing to build together.
