🛠️ Honouring the past whilst investing in our future
There was a lovely article in the Glasgow Times yesterday about our Port Stones project. As part of celebrations marking the city’s 850th anniversary, the project saw stone markers being laid at the original sites of Glasgow’s city gates. Stonemasons of the future took their first steps into the industry as part of the project, with construction apprentices at City of Glasgow College having a hand in designing and laying out the markers.
Callan McBroom, first year stonemasonry apprentice, said: “Being involved in the cutting of these stones for the city’s 850th was a proud moment. It’s not every day you work on something that’s going to stand in Glasgow for generations.”
As one of Glasgow’s oldest civic institutions, we’re proud to have supported this project that both preserves our city’s rich heritage and helps young tradespeople build a future rooted in craftsmanship and care.
UNDER the feet of modern-day Glaswegians going about their business, four new paving stones tell a story of the city’s past.

The Merchants House building was complete in 1877, the design completed by John Burnet also included offices for the chamber of commerce in the city. Substantial alterations were made however in 1908, which included two storeys which still exists to this day.
The house is a registered charity which provides funding to voluntary organisations and groups across Glasgow and the West of Scotland, it also makes grants from it’s funds to various educational institutions whom provide bursaries to students and schoolchildren through the George Craig Trust. The house has been the recipient of bequests and donations ever since it was first established.
The house is one of the most important and historical parts of the city of Glasgow, first receiving a written constitution way back in 1605. This was to be known as the letter of Guildry which still forms as part of the basic constitution of the House.
Merchants House is situated between the corner of George Square and West George Street in the heart of Glasgow directly adjacent from the city chambers and has became an integral part of the wider community and beyond.
Membership of the house is drawn from men and women in business established within the Glasgow area or in West of Scotland with Glasgow connections, if they are in business on their own account to a substantial extent or in a good practice in a recognized profession. The present official membership of the house stands at almost 1000. Thirty six directors who are elected by the members carry on the active work of the house.
Merchants house is chaired by the Lord Dean who is also known as the second citizen of Glasgow after the lord provost.
