By 2018ish I was the last Pin Ups/One More Tune DJ left standing (the other chaps had retired, nothing more sinister than that, they are still amongst my best pals in the universe). DJing solo and more regularly undoubtedly made me raise my game to another level, but I was also always aware all responsibilities lay with me. I recall DJing a wedding in late 2019 in absolute shreds (pretty sure I had covid) but the show had to go on.

I had tried to find replacement DJs but it's very hard to find someone with esoteric music knowledge and competent mixing skills, who looks presentable, who is always on time and always prepared, who has equipment and back-up equipment, who knows when to people please, who knows when to tactfully tell certain guests to GTF, who can talk on the mic, who will never ever play S*x on Fire, who will also never panic even after they spill a Diet Irn Bru over their (main) mixer during a first dance ๐Ÿ˜ฌ - I had/have 100+ 5 star reviews for this complicated mix of reasons.

In my absence from Scotland my friend Dave has taken my place to fulfil 2026 bookings. We were absolutely transparent with clients and I'm absolutely delighted by these rave reviews from weddings at The Biscuit Factory. I'd known Dave for decades but it was that connected man who reminded me that Dave still DJd.ย When I realised Dave still DJd I knew he was the person to replace me.

My sincere thanks also toย , .haggis, , and who have been fountains of wisdom and support, referrals, and also very capable substitutes over the last few years. John D. x

Why read one book about Del Amitri when you can read two? I saw Russell Crowe tweeting/Xing last week about how much "Nothing Ever Happens" means to him and wanted to get in on sharing my appreciation of a big Glasgow music success story.

"The Tremolo Diaries: life on the road as well as other diseases", is the frontman's own account of touring the US and Europe (supporting Ba*****ed Ladies and Simple Minds, respectively) while dealing with early on-set Parkinson's. He often keeps himself to himself in daytime, exploring cafes and second hand shops. It's really honest. Where he thinks things are sh*te he says so. It's nice to see how many music biz folk he meets back up with who worked with him in the 90s when Del Amitri were on the way to scoring multiple US hot 100 hits. The book was a kind gift from big sister .dee.104 after we saw Del Amitri live a few years back.

I read "These are such perfect days: the Del Amitri story" by Charles Rawlings-Way back in 2022 and I should have posted about it earlier as it's a cut above the average rock bio. I assume the author got full and proper access to Justin and right hand man Ian Harvie as there's a terrific level of detail, from riding high with worldwide hit "Roll To Me", to a memorably unflinching look at how the band fizzled out in 2002.

I met Justin in 2010 when he DJd at Pin Ups Ladies Night 3 party as an extra bonus who we had billed on the poster as a "secret hunky treat".ย Back when Facebook Events were critical to a party's success we leaked a few days out that the hunk's initials were JC and did not discourage anyone from inferring Jarvis Cocker or Julian Casablancas. Either of those would have been delighted with the 1am reception Justin received as we brought him to the decks following a quick medley of his hits, and he proceeded to play punk 7 inches. This arose because a month before I had seen him in Nice n Sleazys, and asked him if I could touch his sideburns.ย  He could tell that I was a genuine fan as I bored him about many of his songs. (James Graham of The Twilight Sad and Al Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand, to name just 2, have also endured this Sleazys slobbering.)

Omitted to review 's terrific retrospective last autumn. More musicians should take this route of artefacts and chat, rather than writing the one crap novel that lurked within them ๐Ÿ˜‚ With an honorary mention for too. 5/5

Night People (how to be a DJ in 90s New York City) by . I like to check book reviews but only *after* I've read a book. One reviewer queried who this "incredibly niche book naming venues and DJs and songs is for". Me! It's for me! Every page was brilliant.

Ronson has been called a Nepo Baby but the number of bangers he has had a hand in at this point speak for themselves. One way or another he put in serious hours of DJ graft and there's an official Spotify playlist collecting every song mentioned. Mostly amazing tunes (T.R.O.Y. gets several special mentions) apart from what I'd call strangely bland mid-tempo 80s r&b of the type I've never personally got into. He's also a superfan of A Tribe Called Quest (me too) and Biggie Smalls (who I know less about).

In terms of DJ techniques I will certainly be trying to mix more medleys after reading this. He also seems to like dipping the volume during sing-along choruses, and jumping straight into another song. The times I've tried this I've received outright abuse, so I'm not so sure about that.

Thank you & . This early autumn wedding at was an absolute delight. Look at that scenery!

The dominant musical theme ended up being kind of noughties/2010s pop though I did also include Irish countryish things like Van Morrison, Saw Doctors, CMAT.

While I was packing up somebody got on their phone and the venue PA and chucked on a few things which were fairly well received. I can't remember what they were. Maybe, surprisingly, newer Katy Perry? Usually folk trying to DJ after I finish has a horrific Lord of the Flies vibe but this was OK.

I also did probably ask for a review a few too many times and I'm lucky the happy couple didn't tell me to eff off. Requesting Reviews is a topic in itself as there are absolutely amazing DJs who appear under reviewed, while some real cheesemongers seem to be sitting with an outrageous 100+ on Google.

An evening at barnbougle castle or barnboogie castle as it surely will forever now be known. Apparently Calvin Harris DJd at some Rolex event on the balcony weeks before my appearance at Jack and Nicole's reception. I was however merely down on the floor by the fire, which is no doubt a metaphor, but I don't mind.

The first dance was the very smooth take on Thinking of You with a Bride & Groom mandated Praise You by afterwards. I tried to "go" with the big beat vibe by then playing A Little Less Conversation, and History Repeating (Propeller heads/Dame Shirley Bassey) which opened up all sorts of possibilities. Opening a wedding reception can be a bit like breaking open the reds in snooker.

It turned out I had actually met Jack and Nicole many years before - keep swiping to hear the sensational post party truth about my match making role, and a lovely 5-star review :-)

Terrific experience DJing at the finish line of the Great Scottish Run in Glasgow Green. Congrats to all winners and all participants especially those who got their own dedicated finishing line theme songs from me!

Special mention to the announcers Graham Anderson and Susie Barrett whose knowledge, enthusiasm and ability to chat for hours (and also correctly identify loads of runners) was seriously impressive.

The legendary was also in attendance to give Graham and Susie a break.

I played around 8 hours of tunes without many doublers. Alive and Kicking into Movin On Up was my favourite feelgood combo of the day. (Fun fact - Graham dissed "Ace of Spades" on the mic, calling it "thrash metal" and ordered me to play some disco ๐Ÿ˜‚..rumours of a GBX section are unconfirmed...)

Thank you Jane and Adam! A fine time was had at the in Ayrshire's surely fanciest town of Troon. Hits included "fight for your right" and also the repeated but initially baffling request of "CRAAAW ROAD" (which I eventually realised meant "Born Slippy")! I also played Eddie Reader's beautiful version of Robert Burns' "my love is like a red red rose" as a special buffet time ballad.

It was nice to be back in Troon as I spent some time working in the area in 2012, utterly hating the cul de sac my day job career appeared to be in, and also facing up to the "let's go out at the top" end of Pin Up Nights after 8 years, which probably plunged me into some sort of complex identity crisis I can only now acknowledge. I had quite a mad trip to Ayr Races during this period which involved an 11am train, crashing the VIP champagne bit, and returning to Glasgow only to be invited to leave the around 1am for essentially jumping around the carpet dancefloor bit like a jockeyless horse (I've never ever been back ๐Ÿ˜ฌ).

While packing up at Jane and Adam's wedding I also regaled a few of the really lovely older guests (waiting for a taxi) with tales of my 2012 accidental speeding exploits on the big wide open road down to Prestwick. One morning there were flashing lights behind me and I pulled in to let the police by. It took me a while to realise they were chasing ME. I was shaking like a sh*tting dog when they got me out of the car as I had no idea what speed I had been doing. I almost hugged the police person when they said I'd clocked a mere 84mph. And they didn't ask me about any missing champagne bottles from Ayr Races either. Win-win. And Chin Chin! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿฅ‚ ๐Ÿด ๐ŸŽ

All the best to Jane and Adam, lovely gentle couple with really nice guests. X

JD Twitch, the legendary DJ I was frankly a bit intimidated by. Used to give me ad hoc and sometimes usefully blunt party promotion advice. Was very kind and gave me a quote/blurb for my book. Besides the formidable DJ skills, generosity is a huge theme in everything you will see posted about this guy.

I didn't go to Optimo loads, I had a very sensible day job in the civil service then legal offices during the peak years. When I made it, I seemed to go the week after something famous had happened. No problem. I have 3 quite specific memories of 3 monstrous unexpected drops of the type that make you (almost) embarrass yourself on a dancefloor - Sound & Vision, Don't Call, and S*x Dwarf. Sensational.

Condolences to Jonnie and Keith's other loved ones.
