South Block is a 50,000 sq.ft, four floor studio and creative office complex in the heart of Glasgow's Merchant City. The building is home to around 150 architects, designers, and other creative practitioners. South Block hosts a year-round programme of art, architecture, and design exhibitions and events in its street-facing gallery space, alongside the beautiful espresso bar All That Is Coffee. South Block is part of Wasps Studios.

Rosalind Lawless is a renowned printmaker based at South Block in Merchant City. She's had a studio space here since 2011.

Lawless' practice is strongly influenced by her immediate surroundings. Using commonplace imagery to organise the pictorial space and forms that occupy and give perspective within the substrate, she continues to explore the imagined and observed within architecture through the process of layering, repetition, cut-outs, washout and transforming.

She graduated with a Masters of Fine Art Printmaking from the Royal College of Art, London in 2004. Recent awards include the RSA Residencies for Scotland, RSA William Littlejohn Award, Scholarship to the International Academy of Fine Arts, Salzburg, Bet Low Award, shortlisted for the Anna Lobner/Dusseldorf Exchange.

South Block is a former garment factory in Merchant City, transformed into an artist studio and creative office complex by Wasps in 2013. Today, the building provides workspace to a community of around 150 artists, makers and designers.

Jason Bentley is a classical realist painter with a studio space at South Block since 2022.

Originally from Illinois, Jason now lives in Scotland. He is a graduate of the Ayrshire Atelier of Fine Art. He is devoted to modern academic methods with focus on the portrait and figure. From his studio space, works on commissions, and he teaches using oils, graphite/charcoal and watercolour.

Mandy Reid Foster is a visual artist based at South Block. She joined the building as a tenant in Spring 2025.

Originally from Aberdeen, Mandy has lived in Glasgow for over 20 years, having studied design before turning her hand to drawing. Her vibrant pastel creations are inspired by Scottish landscapes and views, as she works en plein air and back in her studio.

A prime office location for a creative industries tenant is becoming available at South Block this Spring 2026. The space would be suited to architecture firms or design agencies looking for a contemporary setting within a heritage building in Glasgow's Merchant City.

A late Victorian former steamie and garment factory, South Block was taken over by Wasps in 2011 to establish studio and office provision for Glasgow's art and design community. Over 150 freelancers and businesses are currently based there.

Welcome from Wasps to our new creative industries tenant at South Block, River Runs Deep!

The design agency had a fantastic 2025 for business, and kicked off the new year by moving into their office space at South Block. We are looking forward to seeing them grow here, and for them to get acquainted with the wide-ranging, talented cultural community already based at the building.

Join us at South Block in Glasgow on Friday 12 December (5pm–8pm) to see this new body of work by visual artist and RSA x Wasps 2024 Award Winner Catherine Lily Mearns.

'Interpretations' is a collection of works by Catherine Lily Mearns, born from the individuality of perception. How each individual interprets what they hear and internalise. There are no facts, only interpretations; with every retelling of a story you change the original memory. Reframing our lives.

Inspired by phrases such as slipping through my fingers, and every cloud has a silver lining. I reflected on how certain sayings spoke to me, and how I personally interpret them. How they resonated with me when I pondered over them built up the composition. What in my life do I see through these sayings?

My creative process is reflection, I apply my vision through mark making and expressive forms, taking a painterly approach to my use of media. I love having fun with my work, while posing a question to the viewer and in this exhibition through a mix of media I was able to do so. In the last few years I discovered a love for ceramics and what they can symbolise, previously using them as a reference to the human form. Using paints, inks, and glazes for my expression I can capture the vibrancy, the delicacy and the rush of life. By reframing my experiences through each piece I create, I am better able to understand the world around me.

The exhibition will be open Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm (and Saturdays, subject to cafe opening hours) until 26 January 2026.

Catherine Lily Mearns is based in the North-east of Scotland. They studied Painting (Hons) at Grays School of Art RGU, graduating in 2024.

This week sees the arrival of the Big Think team to South Block in Glasgow. We're excited to have them at the building, as they will fit right in alongside the incredibly multi-talented creative community based there.

Established nearly 15 years ago, Big Think is a media, marketing, web and design agency with projects for National Theatre Scotland, TRANSMT Festival, Paesano Pizza and City of Glasgow College under their belt.

Their passion for storytelling and innovative thinking make them a fantastic addition to the vibrant mix of creatives, designers, and makers who call South Block their home from home.

We’re excited to be the new home of BUILDHOLLYWOOD Scotland at South Block in the heart of Glasgow's Merchant City. Their team makes an amazing addition to the thriving creative community based there, being surrounded by like-minded designers and artists.

Just this year they've worked on amazing street campaigns spotted around the city for Glasgow Print Fair, Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival and a new painted mural celebrating GSA graduate Jasleen Kaur's Turner Prize win.
