It’s that time of year again, when we’re told humanists are Grinches trying to “abolish Christmas”.

In reality, many of us have no issues celebrating at this time of year, partly because it pre-dates Christianity altogether.

By the 4th century, the Christian church realised it was easier to adopt existing midwinter celebrations like Yule and the Roman festival of Sol Invictus rather than banning them, so the Nativity was placed on 25 December. The traditions carried on, just with new branding.

So next time someone asks, “why aren’t you working on Christmas day if you don’t believe in Jesus?” the answer is simple: humanists aren’t borrowing Christmas. Midwinter has always been about light, community, renewal, and getting through the darkest days together- and eating far too much 😆

You can read more about the history of Christmas, and how humanists approach it, here: https://www.humanism.scot/2017/12/01/humanists-celebrate-christmas/

Thinking of writing personal vows for you wedding ceremony but not sure where to start? We get that the blank page can be very daunting! Here's a wee pep talk from Rona - The Humanist Celebrant this to get you started 🥰 🖋️

“Don’t overthink it!
"Be honest. Be funny. Be a bit mushy. Be real. Be you. That’s what makes it beautiful.
Writing your own vows isn’t about getting it “right”.
It’s about telling your person what they mean to you.
And that? You already know.”

Interesting! 🤔

It’s official: 15% of all marriages in Northern Ireland last year were humanist marriages. This means it is highly likely that there were more humanist marriages than religious marriages conducted by the three big Protestant churches.

They also show something else. Northern Ireland is not the country it used to be. Gone is the era when the population might be stereotyped as entirely Protestant or Catholic. It is clear that there is a third major group in NI society today – and that’s us.

These figures confirm what we’ve seen in practice: more and more couples are choosing a humanist marriage ceremony because they want something authentic, personal, and reflective of their own lives and beliefs.
