Knowlton Church Henge.
Knowlton church stands in the middle of the henge, and symbolises the transition from pagan to Christian worship. Early Christian activity at Knowlton is indicated by a mid-to-late Anglo-Saxon inhumation cemetery which was discovered to the east of Church Henge in 1958. Excavations located sixteen burials within chalk-cut graves, some aligned east-west.
The earliest parts of the church are the 12th century chancel and nave and there are 15th and 18th century additions and alterations. In the 18th century the roof fell in and the church was abandoned.

Ever since reading about the East Stour cross many years ago ,probably a preaching cross of the late Anglo Saxon period over 1000 yrs ago, I have been intrigued.
The old book that referenced this cross stated a piece heavily carved was in the North wall of the vicarage in Gillingham Dorset, I searched and searched but to no avail.
whilst Photographing a Christening some years ago in St Mary's ,an object on a window sill took my eye, it was indeed a fragment of the allusive cross . (A large piece of cross shaft now stands in a court yard of the British Museum.) I have always wondered what the cross would have looked like in its original form ,but alas we can only imagine from other examples found in the area.
Images of Saxon crosses for examples only, The fragment which is on display in St Mary's Gillingham and the piece now in the British .Museum, London.
POST UPDATE .
I have recently visited St Mary,s Church, I Took a good look at the piece of cross shaft mentioned in this post. On one face of the shaft I noticed something quite interesting, some time after the cross had been broken up ,a Mass dial ,sometimes known as a scratch dial was carved into the stone, the Mass dial is a sun dial ,to tell the congregation the times of mass, prior to the reformation of the 16th century , could this be another show of the new concurs the old?Christianity over previous thinking? I have added an image of the Mass dial on the cross shaft.

The North door of St Edwards Church ,Stow-on-the-wold.
The church with parts dating back to the 11th century built to replace the earlier Saxon wooden building on the site, with suggested links to Edward the confessor.
The trees are in the region of 700 years old and this door is thought to be the inspiration for J.R.R Tolkiens door of Moria.
