This never gets old for me.. I was so chuffed to see the red one, Amanita muscaria although the beautiful aubergine colour of the Russulaeae & the manner in which the Bracket polyopores grows out of the tree was also intriguing. I wouldn’t dare touch them or pretend to know if any of them can be eaten, I’m just there to get excited…. again…. every year without fail.

My garden border consisted of a meadow flower patch, a grassy track, a water trough etc but the area that provoked much love and admiration was my hedgerow. It was never meant to be one side of the border but as colours faded I had to think on my feet of how to add in seasonal interest. I “let go” the hope of brightly coloured meadow flowers and instead embraced the autumnal bounty of berries, crimson foliage & golden bracken slowly realising that this is where I feel most at home. I try so hard to appreciate other seasons, and I do but Autumn has to be the ever generous grand gesture of those striking colourful displays before bowing out for winter.

The professional photos have arrived taken autumn fair on the soggiest of soggy days. Hey Ho, it didn’t stop me thoroughly enjoying meeting . He was particularly keen on my water trough that will be relocated to my own garden at some point. Relocating as much of my plants as possible so nothing is wasted and as much as possible can still be enjoyed for the feast of the season hopefully to return next year.

Colour…. I love it.
However, with the best will in the world these meadow flowers had other ideas. All flowers, plants and trees have their season but succession planting where you are mindful of what will be in flower and when it’s important when a design is to have as much interest for as long as possible. Whether it’s intense colour that fades or a flower to a seed head the garden needs to be a gift that keeps on giving.
Imagine the difference in my border if the competition had taken place earlier in the year!! I needed to think on my feet but that’s for another post. In the meantime instead of being sad that a bloom has passed and be excited of what will be next.
