Huge congratulations to all our runners who completed yesterday's Sanlam Cape Town Marathon. Like so many other major marathons this year it was a quick race. Ethiopia’s Mohamed Esa won the men’s event in 2:04:55, and his compatriot Dera Dida clinched the women's title in 2:23:18, both times were new course records. The legendary Kenyan runner, Eliud Kipchoge finished 16th (2:13:29) in his debut on African soil and the first leg of his plan to run on all seven continents over the next year.
After the success of this year's race, which was the final step in its qualification to join the Abbott Marathon Majors, we expect the 2027 race to be the eighth race in world's preeminent marathon series. Watch this space for further updates.

It was a warm day in Paro, Bhutan for today's running of the Thunder Dragon Marathon and Half Marathon. All the runners are now back at the hotel and recovering. The consensus was it's a challenging course with a tough second half, which includes most of the 900m of climbing in the marathon and 400m in the half.
Despite those conditions two local runners, Jampel Choda (2:59:15) and Tashi Norbu (2:59:17), both came in under three hours to claim first and second in the marathon and both beat the previous course record.
The top international marathon runner was Germany's Dietmar Birkhoelzer who came home in 4:37:27. The leading women's marathon performer was Australia's Sheena Appleyard in 4:50:43.
In the half marathon local runner Sangay Yuden won the race in 2:12:42. The top international runner was Germany's Ludwig Hinterschewpfinger in 2:15:46 with top international woman Slovenia's Barbara F*x in 2:37:22.

It is a big day today. It's race day at the Thunder Dragon Marathon and Half Marathon in Bhutan, a race we organise. But we also have a big group of runners down in South Africa running the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, which today should be its final stage of qualifying to join the Abbott World Marathon Majors.
The two races epitomise the variety that the world of running offers. In Bhutan we have a field of around 150 runners across the half marathon and marathon, while Cape Town is a 'small' big city race with only 27,000 runners. Yet both are the biggest events in their respective countries.

Everyone who comes to Bhutan visits Paro Taktsang (the Tiger's Nest), a sacred Buddhist monastery perched improbably on a sheer cliff 900 meters above the Paro Valley. It's a 6.5km round trip up and down a mountain path to see the monastery which sits around 3200m.
For our first group of clients in the country to run next weekend's Thunder Dragon Marathon, today's trek up to the Tiger's Nest is perfect acclimatisation for the marathon and preparation for a four-day trek which starts tomorrow.
By next Sunday running a marathon at 2200m is going to feel considerably easier than it does today.

Up until 1974 Bhutan was a closed country. There were no foreign visitors and even when they started to come it was another 25 years before TV first arrived in this tiny Himalayan Kingdom. So it's reassuring that on a Saturday night in the remote, rural middle of the country you can still find a TV showing the English FA Cup final. Is that a good thing?
