Let the music surprise you.
Can we be a little more fluid with our music choices?
Don’t leave a venue or switch off because you don’t recognise a track. And don’t dismiss a night because somewhere else is playing the familiar commercial hits you already know from the radio.
Music is about discovery. It’s about hearing something for the first time, listening without immediately deciding whether it’s “your thing”, and giving yourself the chance to be surprised.
And do you know how many tracks we as DJs have to listen to that aren’t necessarily our thing? Hundreds, if not thousands. We’re constantly listening to new releases, digging through music, researching what’s coming out and keeping up with different sounds and genres. Not because we love every single track, but because being a good selector means knowing what’s out there.
It might be right up your street. It might not. That’s okay. But if we never step outside what we already know, we’re missing out on so much incredible music.
So let’s open our ears, expand our minds and embrace a little variety.
Maybe we can start moving away from the constant requests for Rihanna, Taylor Swift and the same handful of commercial tracks we hear everywhere else.
There’s a whole world of music out there. Listen. Discover. Enjoy. You might just find your next favourite track.
