What is the significance of wearing a wedding ring on the fourth finger of the left hand?

The tradition of wearing a engagement and wedding rings on the left hand stems from an ancient Egyptian belief that a vein, the vena amoris ("vein of love"), ran directly from the fourth finger of the left hand to the heart. In the 16th century, King Edward VI declared that all couples must wear their wedding rings on the fourth finger of the left hand. Modern science shows the vena amoris does not exist, but the symbolic connection to the heart ensures the custom persists in many Western cultures.

The ring represents the never-ending, seamless bond of the unity, with no beginning and no end. This unbroken circle serves as a visual reminder of the vows exchanged on their wedding day, promising to love, honour, and cherish one another for a lifetime.

Yesterday was another happy day at the De Vere Tortworth Court. I again had the pleasure to be Toastmaster for the happy couple tying the knot. Tortworth is such a beautiful place to hold a wedding with a 'Wow' around every corner. both inside and out.
