Some problems are so large that we hardly know where to begin.

Hunger. Homelessness. War. Loneliness.

We care, but we can still feel powerless.

In St Matthew’s Gospel, the disciples are faced with a huge crowd and not enough food. Their first response is understandable: “Send them away.” Jesus refuses. He begins with what they actually have, five loaves and two fish.

This is not an easy claim that one small kindness will put everything right. It won’t. We still need justice, political action and the courage to ask why people are hungry in the first place.

But the size of the problem cannot become our excuse for looking away.

Most of us have something we can offer: an hour, a meal, a phone call, a listening ear, a voice that can speak up.

You can't do everything, but you can do something.

Where could it make a difference today?

After weeks of dry weather the rain has finally arrived in Edinburgh.

Nobody blames dry ground for needing water. Yet we can be very quick to blame ourselves when we run out of energy, patience or strength.

Weariness is not always a sign that we need to push harder. Sometimes it tells us that we need care or to stop or to change. Or that we just need help.

Jesus does not say, “Come to me when you have finished everything.”

He says, “Come to me, all you who are weary.”

What might your tiredness be trying to tell you today?

You cannot fix everything. That does not mean you can do nothing.

Many of us move from one crisis to another, one horrible headline to the next, carrying more burdens than any human being was meant to carry.

Caring is not wrong.
Love should make us concerned.
Compassion should disturb us when others suffer.
Faith should make us restless in the presence of injustice.

But when every problem feels urgent, we can become exhausted, overwhelmed and stuck.

Jesus once told a story about wheat and weeds growing together in a field. The servants wanted to pull the weeds out immediately, but they could not see the whole field, and their certainty risked destroying what was good.

That is not an excuse for silence.

We are not called to uproot people, but we are called to resist what destroys life. We can challenge prejudice, protect someone vulnerable, repair a relationship, share a burden and make belonging real.

We cannot tend the whole field.
But each of us has one patch entrusted to our care.

One person.
One need.
One injustice.
One act of compassion.
One thing within reach.

There is only one Saviour, and it is not us. Thanks be to God.
But we are called.
We are equipped.
And we are not powerless.
What is one patch of the field you can tend today?
