Friends and family of Joe and Douglas came from far and wide to celebrate their marriage in East Lothian. And they were not disappointed… firstly the wow factor of the fabulous architecture of Gosford House. The wedding parties made a dramatic theatrical entrance coming down both sides of the sweeping double staircase. All were moved when Douglas and Joe shared their personal vows which they had kept secret from each other until the ceremony. And as we were in Scotland, we finished with our newly weds drinking from the quaich and a Scottish blessing. Then outside for a long line of guests throwing confetti and photos on the stairs overlooking glorious parkland. A very joyous occasion. Wishing Joe and Douglas every happiness.

Boh and Emily had their wedding at Free Company, a delightful farmhouse out in the countryside beyond Balerno with a reputation for delicious organic food. We had the ceremony outside under an awning. Many guests had come from the Far East and enjoyed the Scottish touches, the handfasting, an ancient Gaelic marriage ritual, and drinking from the quaich. And all were moved by the personal vows which they had kept secret from each other until shared in the ceremony. A very relaxed and joyous time. Wishing Emily and Boh every happiness.

When I meet a couple planning to marry, I ask why they want a Humanist Ceremony.
This from the couple I married yesterday is
the most eloquent statement of Humanist beliefs I have ever heard. Their answer:
“… because it reflects how we see the world, guided by logic, reason and evidence and grounded in respect and understanding. We believe that before race, religion, beliefs or politic, we are human- that it is our shared humanity and commitment to kindness and equality that resonate most deeply with us.”.

Yesterday Prestonfield House and gardens were looking wonderful and the weather was( surprisingly!) perfect for the wedding of Eva and Richard.
Richard had used his skills to create an impressive bi-lingual zine to welcome Eva’s friends and family from the Czech Republic and poems and vows were read in both languages.
Eva had sourced a beautiful hand-woven handfasting cord to ‘tie the knot’, this made with satin ropes in her chosen colours, white, taupe and burgundy. We used this cord to tie the hands as our bride and groom made their vows.
And they brought their own fountain pens to sign the wedding register. An unusual personal touch!
Altogether a lovely event much enjoyed by all. Wishing Eva and Richard much happiness together.
