The space is an open platform for creatives of any kind to use and share their ideas with the public. The concept started off as an experimental life drawing event, incorporating a live musician, a dancer, a nude model and a live DJ set.

This took place once a month in the basement of Yellow Bench on Leith Walk. As this event gained popularity, money was raised through a crowdfunding campaign to create a community space where creative concepts like this could happen every night. The space is designed to be affordable and accessible to everyone - people who have never organised events before, musicians who have never played outside their own bedroom, artists who have never exhibited before. It aims to be a space where creativity brings the community together, without money being an obstacle. Everything in the space is donation-based. If you want a cup of tea or coffee, you can help yourself and leave a small donation. If you want to bring your own alcohol, just leave a donation for corkage. If you want to organise your own event, it's free to book, we just ask for a donation from each person who comes in. If you are interested in booking the space for your own event, workshop, meet-up or rehearsal, send us a message! You can also book online through our website:

This evening! Still some spaces left, so send us a message if you'd like to join 🎨

Join Dina Gray, an artist and textile/graphic designer, for an inspiring and practical class designed to ignite your creative journey.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to refresh your approach, this course will guide you through the essential stages of developing your own authentic body of work.

We’ll begin by learning how to collect and record visual ideas in your sketchbook — the heart of your creative process. You’ll explore mark making, collage, and life drawing, while experimenting with colour and composition.

As we go, you’ll start to group your artworks and sketches in a way that naturally leads towards a cohesive collection.

Throughout the process, you’ll draw inspiration from artists and your surroundings, discovering how to stay open, curious, and connected to your visual voice.

This class is all about play, process, and personal expression — with plenty of space to explore, make mistakes, and discover what makes your work uniquely yours.

Donation:

There's an optional donation to go towards the running costs of the classes - this stops people booking up all the free tickets then not showing up! Eventbrite requires £1 to be entered in the box but we can refund that in cash when you attend the class, or you can put it towards a cup of tea from the kitchen ☕

Our Story

Sketchy Beats Cafe is a not-for-profit arts cafe on Great Junction Street, Leith. The space is an open platform for creatives of any kind to use and share their ideas with the public. The concept started off as an experimental life drawing event, incorporating a live musician, a dancer, a n**e model and a live DJ set. This took place once a month in the basement of Yellow Bench, a Polish Bistro on Leith Walk. As this event gained popularity, we raised the money through crowdfunding to create a community space where creative events like this could happen every night. Since the cafe opened in October 2015, members of the local community have organized all kind of events in the cafe: live hip-hop nights, art exhibitions, poetry slams, live music jams, DJ showcases, climate change discussions, life drawing sessions, craft fairs, charity fundraisers, birthday parties and much more. The space is designed to be affordable and accessible to everyone - people who have never organized events before, musicians who have never played outside their own bedroom, artists who have never exhibited before. The cafe aims to be a space where creativity brings the community together, without money being an obstacle. The space is available for anyone to organize their own events, parties and workshops, from the early evening into the small hours. If you are interested in using the space, just message the Sketchy Beats Cafe page with your idea and a suggested date and time.
