So we thought 2024 ended bad, 2025 is even worse. We found out 2 days ago that Guys cancer centre can’t do any more to help dad (Art) the chemo is now only 10% effective and if he were to go back on it the risk of another stroke is too high. We now don’t know how long he has got. And tonight Dad is in hospital as he had a heart attack this morning… honestly can’t believe what our family is going through lately 😞

Update on Art.

Arts feeling a bit stronger now. I’m doing daily speech, writing and language therapy with him for around 2-3 hours. Had rehabilitation assessment and waiting for physiotherapist to help with his walking and arm. Speech therapist due Monday. I’ve managed to get him to start reading and copying writing, and we are very slowly improving on the speech. It’s like teaching a 4/5 year old! Speaks sort of dyslexic and trouble getting it out right. But really trying hard. Still has memory problems and it’s a bit of work to get him to remember, people, places, and things that were said or done in the past. Had CT and the bleed had stabilised.
Arts oncologist said the chemo was probably a contributing factor to the stroke. He is now off it for the next month or two as it could lead to another imminent stroke. Problem is they increased his dose in August as a tumour on his remaining kidney had started growing.! So off chemo, tumours grow, on chemo, good chance of another stroke!!
Catch 22 really!!

I would also like to give a big thank you to our daughter Sarah for putting us up (or putting up with us!!) for the time being.

Dear friends and family, I’m sharing a go fund me that I have set up for mum and dad, on top of Dad having a stroke just before Christmas and the emotional wrench that has been, we were driving back from the hospital on Boxing Day and their car died spectacularly when the head gasket blew. They don’t have any money and I’m unfortunately not in a position to be able to buy one for them, I can’t even afford my own car! They really don’t deserve the crap that has been handed them this past week, please have a look at the page and if you could help at all I would be forever thankful ❤️

I’d like to thank everyone for their continuing good wishes for Art.
But it’s been such a sh*te Christmas. Our car spectacularly died on Boxing Day on the way back from the hospital and is now for the scrap yard. We had to keep it from Art until today because of the stress. But wanted to tell him before Keith went home, so the family were all together to support him. Sarah had been driving it as she has no car and I am not allowed to drive until my cataracts are done.
So we are without transport and have no money for a new (second hand) one. God knows what we are going to do.
Obviously Art is upset and we are trying to keep him as unstressed as possible, but by god things are so hard at the moment. 😭😭

I would like to thank everyone who has sent their well wishes for Art. MRI scan this afternoon has confirmed a stroke, but he has a small bleed on the brain and will be kept in over Christmas for observation with another scan after the holidays to see if it has stopped. He is able to walk, has lost some mobility in his right arm and hand, but has unfortunately fairly bad speech difficulty which will need work on and therapy in the oncoming months. He is completely aware that he is talking absolute gibberish and we have been having quite a laugh with him!! (No change there really!!! 😂)
We are all trying to keep positive.
Not the retirement we were hoping for as it’s been only three weeks since we actually handed the keys back, but it does confirm that we made the right decision to close.

Well that’s it, after 10 and half very happy years trading in Horam, we locked the doors for the last time today.
A huge thank you to all our lovely customers and those who have become friends, and all the volunteers who have helped us over the years with our organised village events and celebrations, including the Village Christmas Tree and Fun Night. We would not have been able to do it without you.
However, we will not be far away, as all our stock is now in storage in East Hoathly, only 7 minutes away. We will still be selling off all our rental costumes and can still hire if you wish. We still have plenty of retail stock so let us know if there is anything you need!
We have all our helium balloon stock and will continue taking orders.
Our phone number and email remains the same.
Thank you all once again.
We are very sad to leave the High Street and lots of memories will follow in photo form once we have caught our breath.
(It has been extremely hard work, especially for a couple of our age!) Many thanks also to our children, Sarah and Keith and grandchildren, Grace and George for their invaluable support and help.

We would like to thank all of our customers who came to see us today, our last day, with ’Well Wishes’ plus cakes, flowers, chocolates and bottles of Prosecco! (and quite a few hugs!) We feel very humbled by it all and must admit shed quite a few tears.
You will still see us around for the next few weeks while we have the unenviable task of getting all our remaining stock and 20 rails of hire costumes into storage at East Hoathly.
It has been an amazing 10 1/2 years in Horam, and it has been a pleasure to have made a contribution to the community that we love.
We will miss you all.
