Another Air in G success!
We’ve hosted a number of ‘Air in G’ events over the years, but this month’s Pocket Choral Society may just have been one of the very best. An almost packed hall was treated to an evening of laughter, music, and brilliantly observed village life, brought to us by four hugely talented (and very funny) singers - with just a hint of Flanders and Swan about them.
For one night only, the fictional village of Pocket sprang vividly to life here in North Nibley. Through a series of clever and beautifully performed a ca****la songs, we were introduced to a cast of instantly recognisable characters: Oliver the farmer, Jonathan the landlord of the Crippled Pigeon, Beth from the village shop, and Alistair the priest. Each felt like someone we all know… or might even be!
The songs themselves were a delight - witty, inventive, and often laugh-out-loud funny. Highlights included The Psalm to St Tombolo (a knowing nod to lengthy raffle draws), The History of Pocket (set to My Favourite Things), a disco-inspired ode to dogs, and the truly lovely 1,000 Miles. But the standout moment had to be the bespoke song written on the night, inspired by the Tyndale Monument - one of those perfectly local, you-had-to-be-there moments that had the whole room smiling.
Add in gentle observational humour (including a playful jab at the Village Hall’s fondness for CAPITAL LETTERS), and it all made for a thoroughly entertaining evening.
A huge thank you to the performers for such a memorable night - and to everyone who came along and filled the hall with such a warm, appreciative atmosphere. Here’s to the next ‘Air in G’!
