What happens if my baby needs a feed during their newborn photoshoot? ➡️

This is a question mums often ask, or secretly worry about before coming to the studio.➡️

The truth is, it is very rare for a baby not to need a feed while they are here. Newborns can be constantly hungry, a bit like myself, so I totally understand their needs. When you are hungry, you are hungry, and you need fed now.

Tiny babies have tiny tummies and need to feed little and often, which is exactly why I schedule plenty of extra time for your session.

Even if your little one happens to be having a full on cluster feeding day, that is still completely fine. I simply work around them and let them set the pace. It is all part of normal life as a newborn photographer.

It is completely normal for a baby to arrive and need a feed before we even take a single photo.

Your baby always calls the shots, so you can sink into the big comfy sofa and take all the time you both need. There is never any rush here

One thing so many expecting mums do not realize is that newborn photography is actually a thing.
I get last minute messages all the time from brand new parents trying to squeeze in a session because they simply did not know newborn photography existed until baby arrived.
That makes total sense. Specialist newborn photography is relatively new and it certainly was not around when todays expecting mums were babies themselves.
If you are pregnant, now is the absolute best time to start looking around. My top recommendation is to book your photographer once you have had your 20 week scan so you are secured and stress free.

Not everyone sleeps at their newborn photoshoot. Sometimes they are just too interested in what’s going on around them. Wide awake babies are so interesting to capture, and those wonderful expressions and crinkly newborn foreheads really show your baby’s little personality.

If I’d had the foresight to have a newborn session with any of my four babies (I didn’t, and it’s a huge regret), I would have been that mum worrying that my baby wouldn’t sleep. Looking back, that energy is completely unnecessary.

Plus, the even better news: if your baby is awake in my studio, they will almost certainly give you a few hours of sleepy time afterwards.

Newborn babies have the sweetest little fingers and toes.

And, believe it or not, they are all so different

Some have curled up toes, some have long delicate baby fingers and toes and some have chunky toes that remind me of those Monster Muncn crisps.

I distinctly remember counting each one of my first daughter’s 10 miniature fingers and 10 squidgy toes. And I photographed them, however ➡️

by the time I gave birth to her baby sister, under 11 months later, I had no time to photograph her toes ( I’m sure I still counted them )

I would love to have a photograph of her little feet and toes but being a Mum just got in the way and anyway I could look at them everyday, until I couldn’t because suddenly she was 5 and those baby days had gone.

Now she’s in her thirties and I’d give anything to have those precious newborn and baby photos.

So please don’t put off booking a newborn or baby photography session. It’s something you’ll have forever and you’ll have no regrets.

And that’s only the number of photos sitting on my current iPhone.
In my spare room, I have a box of discarded iPhones—every single one packed with memories.
Of course, I backed them all up onto an external drive each time I upgraded. And because the thought of losing those moments terrifies me, I backed them up again onto another drive. And onto the Cloud.
So now? I have a cabinet overflowing with hard drives, a Cloud subscription that makes my eyes water, and a simple question: Can I actually find any of those photos when I want them?
Absolutely not.
After hours of plugging in drives, guessing file names, and scrolling through endless digital noise, I give up and vow to finally print them out.
And, of course, I never do.
That is exactly why, at Mabel & Møøse, I will always offer beautiful, professionally printed photographs.
