Sometimes it’s nice to learn a little bit more about the girl behind the business.
I’m a Barnsley girl born and bred and I’ve always been fascinated with Alice in Wonderland, reading the book many times during childhood and beyond.
I enjoyed school and college and built a career in accountancy, it paid the bills but it was never my dream.
Anyway god had other ideas for me … on Monday 12th March 2007 at the age of 35 and through no fault of my own I was involved in a very serious road traffic accident whilst driving to work, a journey that resulted in me fighting for my life.
The Fire Service cut me from the wreckage of my car and the attending Yorkshire Air Ambulance took care of my extensive injuries at the scene, twice resuscitating me before placing me on a spinal board and covering me in foil sheets to keep me warm. After carefully loading me into the YAA helicopter (G-SASH) they flew me to Hull Royal Infirmary, having to resuscitate me again during the flight.
The care, concern, dedication and medical expertise the crew showed me on that day will stay with me forever, from gently talking to me to comforting me and willing me to go on.
After arriving at the Hull Royal Infirmary helipad within 20 minutes, I was handed over into the care of the waiting hospital staff, and after spending some time in the emergency resuscitation department an MRI scan confirmed that I had broken several vertebrae in my back and one in my neck, alongside various other injuries and breakages. After initially being admitted to the high dependency ward, then on flat bed rest on the major trauma ward, Hull Royal Infirmary became my home for 14 weeks (100 nights).
However despite my injuries my spirit was not broken and my story is thankfully a positive one, as after leaving hospital on the 19th June 2007 and afterwards wearing a specially made body brace from the United States for 3 months, I was able to walk again and within 2 years I found the courage to return to driving.
I still have on going health issues resulting from my accident, however, I smile constantly because I know how incredibly lucky I am to be on this earth and after such a long time you learn to live with pain.
After such a life changing situation you think differently and you feel differently.
Having not worked in a long time due to my accident, I decided 2 years ago to start my own business, but finally doing what I really love, Alice in Wonderland and meeting people, whilst accepting that due to the breakage in my neck my days behind a desk were over.
So after a very deep breath I started Down The Rabbit Hole Tea Parties.
Making my hobby my job is exhilarating, fun, brilliant and scary all rolled into one.
I have met the most lovely people on this journey and hosted some very special parties for all different occasions, and I cater for all age groups and all celebrations.
Please keep supporting my little business, it really means the world to me.
Please support the YAA too as sadly no one knows when they may need them.
Be kind, do what makes you happy and always take care, especially when driving.
ALWAYS DREAM BIG, miracles do happen!
Thank you to all of you in my life for the love and support you show me daily, I couldn’t do it without you.
