A little Sunday morning read 🌸

I may have gone slightly dahlia mad this year… propagation got rather out of hand, five unexpected planters appeared and there has been rather more yellow than I bargained for. 😅

Plus a little on pinching, cutting — and why I ended up dancing with my dahlias.

Out and About: This lovely little bumblebee mistook my UV sleeve for the real thing and settled quite happily on one of the flowers.

I didn’t have the heart to tell him he’d been duped by a bit of printed fabric.

Another tiny encounter that made me stop, smile and notice what was happening around me.

Sometimes it’s the smallest moments in an ordinary day that bring the most delight.

Our pressed flower workshops are proving rather popular.

Pressed flower art feels like a natural extension of the preservation work I have been doing for some time. Taking flowers beyond their relatively fleeting life in the garden and finding another way to enjoy them.

We start with flowers and foliage, including seasonal material from my own cutting garden, learn about pressing and preserving them, and then use an assortment of already pressed botanicals to create individual framed. 💐

I’ve started writing again 🌸

After rather a long break from my Substack, I’m back in the cutting garden — although this summer the garden seems determined to run to its own timetable.

What better way to celebrate a bride-to-be than surrounded by beautiful seasonal flowers?

The afternoon began with a wander through the cutting garden, selecting the freshest blooms before heading into the barn to create natural, hand-tied bouquets. Every arrangement was completely unique, full of personality and the best of what the garden had to offer.

Thank you to such a wonderful group for bringing so much laughter and creativity. I hope your bouquets remind you of a very special day together.

Today in my garden…

Yes, there were pretty flowers, the rose climbing through the apple tree and yes, this lovely little blackbird was keeping me company whilst I potted up my dahlia cuttings. But even more memorable was the glorious water fight I managed to have with myself every time I moved the sprinkler.

After blasting myself in the face yet again and drenching my glasses, phone and slippers (yes, this girl gardens in comfort!), I inadvertently kinked the hosepipe.

Initially I was annoyed.

Then came the lightbulb moment.

If kinking the hose stops the water, why on earth have I spent all these years trudging back and forth to the tap every time I wanted to move the sprinkler?

Simply kink the hose, move the sprinkler, back away, and let it spring back to life.
A proper “D’oh!” moment.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who occasionally discovers something blindingly obvious about twenty years later! 😂💦

🌺 Today in my Garden

A rainy June morning and the poppies are putting on quite a show.

These frilly beauties weren’t planted this year. They self-seeded from last summer and have appeared exactly where they wanted to grow. In fact, they have popped up in my newly established rockery, proving once again that nature often has plans of its own.

I love them not only for their ruffled petals but also for the seed heads that follow. They are one of my favourite materials to use in dried arrangements and wreaths, adding texture and interest long after the flowers have faded.

🌿 Did You Know?

The seed heads left behind after the petals fall are where culinary poppy seeds come from. Leave them to ripen and dry on the plant and they can be collected for baking. A lemon and poppy seed muffin would go down rather well on a rainy morning like this. 😅

💐 Florist’s Tip

Many people think poppies don’t make good cut flowers, but they can have a surprisingly good vase life if treated correctly. When you cut them, sear the bottom of the stems in boiling water for 10–15 seconds. This seals the milky sap and helps the flowers take up water, allowing you to enjoy them indoors for much longer.
