It’s rare to come upon interesting light. If I’m lucky, I’ll find a pocket at prep and stick a pair of shoes in it. Sometimes though, you’re extra lucky and have a sea of people as the subjects.

Leaning over the bannister of this beautiful home, there’s lots going on. Nobody is paying attention to me, thankfully. Everyone busy in attempts to fasten their necklace.

One persons looks up for a moment: the only one in a room of 19 or 20. It’s brief. Not long enough that she feels forced to smile. Is there anything more wasteful than forced photos in beautiful light?

I take the photo and retreat to the shadows. For that split second only we knew what was happening. The chaos still happening all around. It’s nice, that.

Maybe the Blair Witch had such an effect on me that I would forever photograph the backs of peoples heads: or maybe it was William Eggleston. We’ll never know.
