We were incredibly excited to see THE Hon Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey at the Royal Over-seas Leauge annual lecture.

She described the world as being in a “hinge moment” …. a period where events aren’t just unfolding, but accelerating. With global conflicts, economic instability, climate pressures, and declining trust in institutions, her message held a spotlight over the uncertainties we face going forward in the commonwealth whilst providing a clear and actionable route to certainty.

What stood out most were the commitments she laid out:

🟡A reformed, sharper Commonwealth Secretariat
Focused on delivery, accountability, and measurable outcome.

🟡Implementation of a new Strategic Plan to 2030

Built with member states around democratic resilience, economic resilience, and climate resilience.

🟡A renewed push on trade and investment
Positioning the Commonwealth as a catalyst for growth, especially for small states, youth-led enterprises, and women-owned businesses.

🟡Stronger climate leadership

Championing a fair definition of vulnerability, unlocking climate finance, and helping small island states transition from “victims to innovators.”

🟡A commitment that CHOGM 2026 will deliver real-world impact. Moving beyond statements to decisions that people can actually feel in daily life.

What resonated most was her insistence that the value of the Commonwealth lies not in political might or economic leverage, but in shared purpose, human connection, and the ability to convene and collaborate.

At Think Events London we think that in a world shaped by volatility, her direction feels both timely and necessary.

While women hold nearly 45% of board seats in FTSE 100 companies, Black women represent just 1.2% of senior managers in the same companies.

We must recognise that women continue to face structural barriers and recognise the impact intersectionality affects how those barriers block certain groups. We need to THINK about what can be done to work towards a better future.

One thing we’re doing at Think Events London is supporting the Business Growth Summit who are hosting speakers such as the High commissioner of Grenada, Rachér Croney.

This event will focus on Women in Business with a keen insight into international trade, business strategy and steps towards enhancing representation across boarders.
