Twenty years ago, Niki & Dean celebrated their wedding at Layer Marney Tower. This August, they came back to where it all began.

And theirs is a wedding we certainly remember…

Dean made his entrance by helicopter, while Niki arrived romantically, on horseback. Pink flowers filled the Tower, they said their vows in the Corsellis Room and celebrated afterwards in the Long Gallery; before dancing the night away with the people they loved.

Exactly 20 years later, Niki & Dean returned to Layer Marney to celebrate their anniversary and revisit some of those memories, including recreating a few of their original wedding photographs. And yes, we think they did a pretty good job. 🥹

There’s something incredibly special about seeing the same couple, in the same rooms, recreating the same moments two decades later.

So much changes in twenty years, but the place where you married has a funny way of taking you straight back.

Autumn at Layer Marney Tower 🍂

As the leaves begin to turn and the evenings draw in, there’s still plenty happening at Layer Marney Tower.

From one last adventure aboard our iconic Routemaster bus, to ghost stories told by candlelight, Halloween fun for the family, an evening with author and adventurer Harry Bucknall, and the return of our sell-out Candlelit Comedy night, we have a wonderfully varied programme taking us through autumn and into winter.

Looking for one last family adventure before summer comes to an end? 🪁

Kite Day returns to Layer Marney Tower on Sunday 6th September, and we’d love to see our big field filled with kites once again!

Bring along your own kite and see how high you can get it, watch the experts from Suffolk Kite Flyers with their kites and buggies, or head to our workshop and make a simple kite of your own.

There’s plenty to enjoy beyond the field too. The Tower and Tearoom will be open throughout the day, making it a lovely opportunity to explore Layer Marney, enjoy some lunch or a slice of cake, and spend the day together before autumn begins.

One year we managed to get over 100 kites into the sky, we'd quite like to see if we can do it again!

Fancy a day out with a difference? Our final Big Bus Tour of 2026 is coming up! 🚌

On Sunday 20th September, Steve Scruton and Ian Wyatt will be back aboard Layer Marney Tower's vintage Routemaster for a day exploring some of the places they've talked about on BBC Essex for years.

From the River Stour at Wrabness and historic Harwich to Dovercourt, the Walton backwaters and the Essex Sunshine Coast, you'll discover local stories, history and probably a few things you never knew about our county; all accompanied by Steve and Ian's commentary, music, fun and a few surprises along the way.

And after a day on the road, we'll return to Layer Marney Tower where Afternoon Tea will be waiting for you in the Long Gallery. 🍰

The day includes a ride aboard our vintage Routemaster, Steve & Ian's commentary, countryside and coastal sightseeing, Afternoon Tea, free parking at Layer Marney Tower and the option to be picked up and dropped off in Colchester City Centre.

Our Big Bus Tours have proved incredibly popular, but 20th September is the final tour of the year so if you've been meaning to experience one, now's the time.

Come and join us at Layer Marney Tower!

We’d love you to join us on Wednesday 2nd September, from 11am to 5pm, at the beautiful Layer Marney Tower as we launch our September Fun Walk Challenge.

The walk marks the start of our month-long challenge, but more importantly, it’s a chance to bring together people from across the Headway Essex family.

With 12 support groups, two day centres and community support across Essex, we know how important it is to create opportunities for people to meet, make new friends and feel part of something bigger.

We’ll be joined by people from our groups, supporters and others taking part in the September challenge. Come along, meet some new faces, have a chat and enjoy a walk together.

Everyone can take part

The walk is fully accessible, and there’s no pressure to walk a certain distance or keep to a particular pace.

Walk as much as you like and build up your steps for September, or simply enjoy a gentle wander around the beautiful grounds. You can take things at your own pace and spend as much or as little time with us as you like.

We’re incredibly grateful to Layer Marney Tower for allowing us to use their beautiful grounds, gatehouse and church free of charge.

There’s also plenty of parking, accessible toilets, a café and a shop, so why not make a day of it? Grab a coffee or cake, explore the grounds and enjoy some time together.

Whether you’re already taking part in our September Fun Walk Challenge or simply fancy coming along for a walk, a chat and some company, we’d be really pleased to see you.

10 years later, back where it all began. 🤍

On 12th August 2016, Sophie and David celebrated their wedding here at Layer Marney Tower. Ten years later, almost to the day, they came back, this time with their children, Henry and Alexandra; to revisit the place that holds so many memories from the beginning of their marriage.

They retraced some of the steps from their wedding day, visited the church and even recreated a few of their photographs together.

There’s something incredibly special about seeing a couple return years later, not just as newlyweds anymore, but as a family. Happy 10th anniversary, Sophie & David. Thank you for coming back and sharing it with us. 🤍
