Goodbye and thank you

The UKAWP will officially close this evening so all that is left is for me to say thank you to every single student, member and friend of the UKAWP.

I’m so proud of this industry and how passionate you all are about your couples.

Don’t forget if you purchased a course you MUST download this from the portal onto your own computer. If you haven’t done this by tomorrow you will have lost the training and we cannot be held responsible.

Walking away from a nearly 20-year business is ridiculous, isn’t it?

Or is it?

When I first launched the UKAWP friends and family thought I was nuts

Why would you train and support the competition?

Why would you freely share your tips and advice?

And don’t get me started on the “why won’t you take commission discussion”

You get the gist.

But my sole focus has always been on you THE WEDDING INDUSTRY. Unplanned, I became a spokesperson advocating for the wedding industry again and again.
During 2020/2021 I gave so many interviews in the press and on TV highlighting how the pandemic was affecting business owners.

But, I also found myself supporting businesses privately who reached out to me for help. You see, even when a member leaves the UKAWP they stay close to me. I will admit this resulted in me having a breakdown from mental exhaustion from helping with the utter devastation so many felt during this time.

I knew I no longer wanted to run the UKAWP but I absolutely couldn’t close at a time when I was needed by so many. So I waited. But following a path that no longer lights your soul results in your light being dimmed. I kept delaying.

I can’t close in wedding season. Should I wait until October, what about November? The UKAWP has an amazing history and reputation, why walk away from this? Am I crazy? The internal debates were immense.

But the truth is, like starting a family there is never a right time. I need to let go so I have the freedom to create more of what brings me joy. I’m itching to leap into creative mode, I have so many plans but currently no capacity to make it happen.

When I work with my consultancy clients it is based on creating the joy and freedom they desire. I wouldn’t be authentic if I didn’t do the same for me.

So although this chapter of the UKAWP closes,
👉 I will still be here.
👉 I’ll still be active within the wedding industry.
👉 I will still be creating courses and products
👉 I will still be active in the press
👉 I’m still going to be supporting and mentoring businesses. BUT it will be under my own name, not the UKAWP.

**IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT**

It is with regret and sadness that I have decided to close the UKAWP.

I am so incredibly proud of what the UKAWP has achieved since 2004, especially standardising professionalism in the industry. But we also experienced many firsts.

1) Launching the first wedding planner / supplier membership

2) Standardising a set of ethics to follow

3) Hosting wedding business workshops

4) Hosting 2 day seminars for wedding planners

5) Numerous courses + downloads

6) Wedding specific coffee mornings and evening soirees

7) Blazing a path for the no commission transparency

There are many reasons for my decision and truth is I have been battling with closing the UKAWP for a few years. There are many personal reasons including health and family, but primarily I don’t think it is needed now.

When I launched the UKAWP there were no memberships, industry bodies nor courses.

Our community was the only wedding planner community around.

Our courses were the only courses to take.

But in 2023 the online space has expanded. There are numerous wedding memberships, entrepreneur memberships not to mention courses and coaching. Which is truly so beautiful to see.

The result is I’m not so sure the UKAWP is needed.

Since losing my step dad in 2021 my focus has been “does it bring me joy”, and sadly running the UKAWP no longer does. It’s a tough decision to close a business that has been part of my business journey for (nearly) 20 years.

But I’m leaving behind a legacy, it feels right to walk away now and work on building new legacies. I have achieved so much over the last 20 years, grown as a leader, built relationships and supported many with personal and professional issues.

I’ll be honest, I no longer feel challenged, a light is shining in a different direction and like any true entrepreneur I must follow even though my heart bleeds at leaving the UKAWP behind.

I have so many plans for my consultancy business that I want to focus solely on this moving forward. This will include 1:1 consultancy, masterminds, training courses and downloadable products. Some will be wedding business focused and some for all creative.

Please know I am so incredibly proud of the UKAWP and all the business has achieved. Making this decision has been hard. Emotionally I feel tied to all my current and past students and members. But in order to scale my business it's time for change.

If you are employing staff for even very short periods of time, it is crucial that you have a contract which protects both parties and makes clear certain obligations concerning confidentiality, invoicing, responsibility for tax/NI and insurance, to name but a few.⁠

Suitable for small independent wedding planning businesses, the directors of UKAWP have developed a freelance staff contract drawing on their knowledge and experience of hiring ad hoc freelance staff both in the office for short periods and on-site at weddings. The contract was prepared in conjunction with an employment lawyer to ensure that it covers all the key legal aspects. It is not to be used as a replacement for a permanent or fixed-term employment contract.⁠
