Really happy to be sprucing up the Selfie Frame for Cumbria Nature Festival … the line up for this weekend festival celebrating Cumbrian wildlife is INCREDIBLE! There are so many fantastic groups involved…

Tickets are available now. 🌸🌱🐞🐝🐦‍⬛

As festival organizers our goal was always to create a grassroots community festival to connect people with nature and show case the very best of local sustainable businesses . That's why we couldn't be prouder to confirm that Harriet and Martyn from The Cumberland Flower Farm are officially in !
Located just across the way in little Clifton ,they specialize in low-energy ,off-grid farming with a traditional cutting garden style .Their approach doesn't just produce beautiful blooms ; it benefits local wildlife and fosters a true connection with nature . We love seeing local makers making a living while giving back to earth . Grab yourself a festival memory in their flower frame .

Wishing you all a very lovely Easter Weekend.

All our Cumbrian flowers are accounted for this weekend, I’m afraid, but it’s a joy to have flowers again and we’re excited for another season of environmentally kind, floristry. Here’s our top-up haul yesterday evening, looking picture perfect as we trundle back to the house, some buckets ready for this weekend’s wedding at the stunning and some new arrivals! The epic poppies are back!

It’s a big week for florists and we’re closed.

How can that be sustainable? Slides show the factors that influenced our decision!

It does feel rather counterintuitive, but whilst saying I love you is lovely, it’s not the life events that motivate our purpose. Flowers in February have a ‘higher than our very low normal’ carbon footprint. And it’s not as profitable as you might think…

There are three interconnected ‘pillars’ or strands to Sustainability. Focus is usually on the environment. And there are good reasons why flowers aren’t the sustainable Valentine’s Day choice. Roses are grown under heat in Europe or more often in the tropics. Countries like Kenya and Columbia supply a lot of our rose consumption! The environmental impact of these flowers is a lot higher than the roses we grow in our field - currently twigs - because of the energy required to transport and keep them refridgerated ‘fresh’, as well as the growing techniques employed.

Even the British grown flowers available now need additional ‘inputs’ - heat and light - to coax them into early flower.

We have no qualms using these for funerals and weddings and know how important it is to support our British growers - winter is important to them - but the price is making it hard to create “a nice bunch at at a reasonable price.”

Which brings us on to the second pillar of sustainability: Profit.

The price I pay for tulips has increased from last February by between 20% and 44%. Same commercially grown tulips. A lot more expensive. Every small business is facing this hard reality at the moment. It’s tough.

Valentines Day is more difficult to ‘take a risk’ on because of the last-minute-ness of ordering. Friday afternoon or Saturday itself is normal. And it’s stressful. Profit is hinged on selling every stem….

Bringing us nicely to the third pillar of sustainability: People. In order to have a good growing season - be able to grow and sell lots of truly environmentally kind, gorgeous flowers - we need to be rested. Not stressed!

Sustainability is more than co2 - love is more than one day, one bouquet…

2025 Highlights and Wins? You didn’t ask 🤭 but here are my top 5….

🌞 Winning The Mitie Business Boost in February 🎉
🌸 Picking Chrysanthemum with spring things in the ground. (Thanks to a new chrysanthemum tunnel, thanks to the Mitie Business Boost!)
🦆Digging our pond in April… funded by flower sales. Just because it’s a brilliant thing too for better biodiversity.
💒 More Cumbrian weddings flowered with more of our blooms than ever before. Even more than Covid years!
🙏 Customers who take the time to thank us for just doing our job. This blows me away. Thank YOU!

Once I’m back at work I’ll wow you with some stats, but for now; Thank you 2025 and everyone who made it sparkle. Here’s to a brilliant 2026!

Harriet x

Last weekend was the Taste Cumbria Christmas event in Cockermouth, with hosting a stunning Supper Club by the Cottage in The Woods on Sunday evening.

What a treat! A twinkling venue, soulful live music, curated drinks, and award winning (I’ve lost count of how many TCITW have accumulated this year!) and utterly exquisite food. Local and seasonal and… wow!

The sparkle was beautifully captured by

Prepping has started… willow wreath bases are being made, foliages gathered. To have one of our signature wreaths, hearts or swags made for you, please order on our website.

Or you can have a go at making one yourself at one of our workshops: (booking on host’s websites!)

On Saturday 29th November at 4pm at Beach Road Bakehouse , St Bees we will guide you through the process of making a compostable wreath using lots of lovely foliages and natural decoration.

There’s also one place on the 6th December at Kirkgate Arts & Heritage in Cockermouth (only the 2pm workshop). Let me know if there’s a couple of you and I’ll add an extra place…

I’m really looking forward to a busy few weeks getting festive! 🎄
