An unassuming but attractive coaching Inn nestling within the Forest of Bowland, an Area of outstanding natural beauty, in the heart of the Ribble Valley. On one side of the building flows the River Ribble, on the other are the remains of the C12th Cistercian Sawley Abbey, and from a distance the magnificent and brooding Pendle Hill casts its shadow.

How old do you think these are? 🕰️

We’ve been digging through old photos of the Spread Eagle, and we need your help.

Some of these show the inn looking very different from how it does today: the stonework before it was painted white, the old “Spread Eagle Hotel” sign above the door, and what looks like one of the old abbey arches standing beside the road. Others are from 1990 and were kindly sent to us.

Do you know roughly when the older photos were taken? Do you recognise anyone in the bar or the kitchen? Or did you work here, drink here or celebrate here over the years?

Rain’s forecast for the whole weekend, so here’s our suggestion.

Pull on your wellies and do the short loop round Sawley Abbey. Then come and dry off with a few small plates at a window table, watching the Ribble go by.

Thinking about a night away?

Here’s how a stay with us usually goes. Arrive in the afternoon and have a wander by the river. Settle into your room, then head down for dinner by the fire. In the morning, the abbey ruins are a two-minute walk across the road, and they’re at their best before anyone else is up.

We’re on the edge of the Forest of Bowland, with Clitheroe 10 minutes away and plenty of walks straight from the door.

If you’ve never been to Sawley, here’s the lay of the land.

The River Ribble runs right past one side of the inn. Across the road are the remains of Sawley Abbey, founded by Cistercian monks in the 12th century and free to wander round. On a clear day, Pendle Hill sits in the distance keeping an eye on everything.

Today it’s misty and drizzly, which honestly makes the walk from river to abbey even better. Then it’s straight in by the fire. 🔥

There's a chair in the bay window with your name on it. 🍂

Mornings at the Spread Eagle start slow: a proper coffee by the window, the Ribble drifting past outside, and nowhere you need to be. Wander over to the abbey ruins, walk off breakfast along the river, then head back up to a bed piled high with pillows.

As the evenings draw in, there's nothing better than swapping the drive home for a night with us in Sawley. Come for dinner, stay for the quiet, and let us look after the rest.
