Whisky, Casks and Clacks – the story so far...

Clackmannanshire has a deep-rooted whisky heritage dating back to the 1720s when Kennetpans Distillery was founded by the Stein family and became the largest distillery in Scotland. Situated on the Firth of Forth, the ruins of what was once considered to be the home of whisky distilling and the birthplace of one of the world’s most famous whisky bran

ds, Haig. More recently, distilleries at Carsebridge and Cambus continued this tradition producing single grain whisky until their respective closures in 1983 & 1993. Clackmannanshire continues to play a critical role in a global industry which is today worth billions to the Scottish economy. DIAGEO is one of the major employers in the county through its presence in Menstrie (European Technical Centre and Archive), Cambus (Scottish cooperage base) with the bond at Blackgrange the largest warehouse complex in Europe holding about three million casks. Clackmannanshire’s Whisky Festival will provide the perfect platform for people to connect & celebratesClackmannanshire’s history and our shared passion for Scotland’s national drink. However, at its heart, this event aims to raise awareness of and funds for our official charity partner, My Name's Doddie Foundation.

🚛 Before whisky arrived on your doorstep... it arrived like this.

Long before barcode scanners, overnight couriers and pallet networks, casks travelled Scotland on vehicles like this.

Pictured is a D.C.L. (Distillers Company Limited) lorry transporting casks from distillery to warehouse — a snapshot of an era when every barrel began its journey on roads very different from today's.

It's photographs like these that tell the story behind the spirit.

Not just what's in the glass...

…but how it got there.

That's exactly why we're introducing our brand-new Whisky Heritage Exhibition at Edinburgh's Whisky Festival this October, Clacks next May and Dundee next June

Thanks to the incredible support of the Diageo Archive, you'll be able to step back through the history of Scotch whisky with rarely seen photographs and stories that deserve to be shared.

HERITAGE 🥃

Before the dram… there were the people. The dock workers who loaded the ships, merchants who built Scotland's reputation, customs men chasing smugglers through the hills (boooo).

The coopers, blenders, warehousemen and whisky makers whose names rarely made the history books.

Occasionally, even a coffin carrying something rather more spirited than its intended passenger. ⚰️🥃

These are just six of the forgotten stories that helped shape Scotch whisky.

This year, we're bringing many more to life in our brand-new Whisky Heritage Exhibition.

Every great dram has a story… and some of the best have almost been forgotten.

Why We Started Slanj Whisky Club.

Festivals are brilliant.

We love the buzz, the atmosphere and seeing hundreds of whisky lovers come together.
But after every festival we'd hear and feel the same thing: "When can we do it again?"

So we created Slanj Whisky Club. A smaller room & group. More conversation & questions. More time to connect with the people behind the drams.

And it's why we love them so much! Next up:

🥃 PARTNERSHIP OPPORTUNITY – Clackmannanshire's Whisky Festival 2027 🥃

As we continue preparations for Clacks 6th Whisky Festival on the 15th May 2027, we have two partnership opportunities available that we'd love to discuss with the right brand or organisation.

🏷️ Official Lanyard Partner
🥃 Official Glencairn Glass Partner

Now, let's be honest.
The festivals will happen regardless.

We're not looking for sponsorship for sponsorship's sake, nor are we interested in simply placing logos on products. What we're looking for is a genuine partnership with a business, organisation or brand that aligns with who we are, what we do and the fabulous community we have built in the Wee County

Every attendee receives a Glencairn tasting glass and festival lanyard on arrival. They become part of the experience from the first dram to the last and often continue to be used long after the festival has ended.

📍 Clackmannanshire's Whisky Festival
Alloa Town Hall
15th May 2027
600 attendees across 2 sessions

Partnership benefits include:

✅ Your brand showcased on official festival lanyards or Glencairn glasses, with styling tailored to suit your brand identity
✅ Exposure throughout the entire festival experience
✅ Visibility across photography, videography and social media content
✅ Direct engagement with a highly engaged whisky audience
✅ Association with all 3 of Scotland's biggest, best & most interactive whisky festivals
✅ A partnership built on collaboration rather than simple sponsorship

Our attendees travel from across Scotland, the UK and increasingly from overseas, including a growing contingent from North America & Europe, all united by a love of whisky, hospitality and good company

If you're part of an organisation that values authentic partnerships, community and quality experiences, we'd love to have a conversation.

What a day last Saturday turned out to be 🥃

Clackmannanshire’s Whisky Festival celebrated its 5th birthday in style.

The biggest footfall we’ve ever welcomed to wee Clacks. The best atmosphere yet. Familiar faces, plenty of new ones, hundreds of drams poured and shared, and a hall absolutely full of conversation and laughter.

Behind the scenes, we spend most of the year working away quietly on the festivals and our tastings at Slanj Whisky Club, but our festivals really remind us that none of it would happen without the incredible people around us.

To our exhibitors — thank you. The effort that goes into packing up, travelling across the country, setting up stands, chatting all day and still leaving at the end of the night smiling and saying “See you in Dundee!” is top notch.

To our Slanj tribe — you know who you are. Thank you for continuing to show up, support us and help create the kind of atmosphere people remember.

A very special mention to Louise Anderson & Katie Moran , our on-the-day event managers. Having them alongside us recently has allowed Graham and I to properly immerse ourselves in the day itself — spending time with ticket holders, catching up with exhibitors and actually soaking in the atmosphere we’ve all worked so hard to create. Our exhibitors will be pleased to know the ladies will return for Dundee & Edinburgh this year.

Huge thanks also to the team at WoodWinters Wines & Whiskies , who put in the work behind the scenes communicating with exhibitors and ensuring attendees have access to bottles to purchase on the day. We’ve been working closely together on some exciting additions for both Dundee’s Whisky Festival and Edinburgh’s Whisky Festival later this year, and we genuinely can’t wait to share more soon.

This year’s Clacks festival felt seamless, efficient, welcoming and full in every sense of the word. The best one yet — and what a birthday present!

A little extra detail from our chat today!

Seeing Clackmannanshire’s Whisky Festival celebrate its 5th birthday this year was genuinely quite emotional for us. What started as a passion project and essentially a hobby between Graham and I has now grown into something bringing hundreds of people into the area from across Scotland and beyond. To see over 520 people through the doors of Alloa Town Hall this year was incredibly special.

We welcomed around 30 exhibitors from across the whisky industry, with hundreds of whiskies being poured throughout the day — everything from household names to independent bottlers and newer distilleries. What really makes Clackmannanshire unique though is the atmosphere. It never feels corporate or untouchable. It feels personal, local and welcoming.

One of the most nicest moments of the day was seeing special drams from lost or ‘ghost’ distilleries being shared with local people whose grandparents had actually worked in those distilleries decades ago these were shared by our exhibitors who, through attending our event now know the importance of a gesture like that. There was a real sense of heritage and connection in the room. Whisky in Clackmannanshire isn’t just a drink — it’s tied deeply into the area’s identity and industrial history.

We had visitors travelling from Newcastle, Hull, Germany, Spain and even Colorado. This couple were visiting Edinburgh from the US, happened to see the festival was on, and literally jumped on a train to attend. In full honesty, that’s not something communities like ours are always accustomed to hearing — and it’s incredibly special to realise people are actively travelling to the Wee County specifically for something we’ve created. That was always the goal.

What’s really important to us is ensuring the festival benefits local people and local businesses wherever possible. We work with local musicians, staff, suppliers and contractors. This year we had fantastic live music from Miller & O'Neill which brought a brilliant atmosphere across both sessions. Its always great seeing folk have a dance after a couple of drams.

Clacks has become the foundation for everything we’re now building. The success and support we’ve had here has allowed us to expand not only into Edinburgh at Murrayfield Stadium in october but now to Dundee with our inaugural festival there this June. The fact two major city events have stemmed from something built in Alloa is honestly something we’re very proud of.... and thats coming from a born and bred Edinburgh girl.

I think what makes Clacks different is that there’s still a real authenticity here. People aren’t coming just to drink whisky — they’re coming for conversation, stories, music, heritage and community. The amount of local faces who live 5 minslutes from one another but now plan to reconnect each year specifically at the festival is brilliant.

We’re growing year on year, but we never want to lose the heart of what made the event successful in the first place —
Clackmannanshire and Graham Lindsay dream of celebrating his home towns rich whisky heritage and the people behind it.

More than 520 whisky lovers attended!🥃
