Cutting the highest hedge in England, 1962. The hedge was planted in the early 1700’s.

Every August, the yew hedge in Cirencester, Gloucestershire which is 40ft high and 150ft wide, gets an annual trim.

Sitting alongside the mansion of an aristocratic Cotswolds estate near Cirencester, this semi-circular plant costs it’s owner £6,000 a year to maintain. It’s difficult to know exactly but Lord Bathhurst (whose great great great great great grandfather planted it) thinks it was planted sometime in the early 1700’s.

As the largest of its kind in the world, it takes two men a grueling 12 days on a cherry picker to cut back the 300-year-old hedge.

Over the last 10 years, yew trimmings have been found to be beneficial in fighting the spread of cancer. The workers lop off the top six inches of new growth, removing nearly a tonne of clippings, which are then used to produce a life-saving drug. They are sold to pharmaceutical companies, which use yew extract as a key ingredient of Docetaxel, a chemotherapy drug used for breast, ovarian and lung cancer.
