ST GEORGE'S DAY

Here's a Throwback to 23 April 2015 when I made some themed cakes and brought out some of my vintage china & accessories to mark the day.

This is marked on 23rd April each year. St George, renowned for his dragon slaying exploits, is the Patron Saint of England and his emblem, a red cross on a white background, is the flag of England and part of the British flag.
St George's emblem was adopted by Richard the Lion Heart and brought to England in the 12th Century. The King's soldiers wore it on their tunics to avoid confusion in battle.

I'm proud to be English and to mark St George's Day I made some cakes and brought out my red china

250TH ANNIVERSARY OF WORDSWORTH'S BIRTH

To mark the anniversary of the birth of the English Romantic poet William Wordsworth on 7 April 1770, here's a Throwback post to 2015 and a reading of his famous poem 'I Wandered Lonely As A Cloud', commonly referred to as 'Daffodils'.

ICED GINGERBREAD WITH STEM GINGER

Today seemed a good day to make this delicious cake, using a recipe from my 'Vintage Cakes' book by Jane Brocket and I brought out part of my 'Argyle' tea set to compliment it. I added pieces of stem ginger into the mixture, which I feel took it to another level and then added more on top as decoration after icing it. The recipe suggests using jellied lemon slices as a variation, which seemed so posh in the 1970s or pieces of candied ginger.

The cake is available as part of our 'Winnie's Afternoon Tea Package'. Please visit our website for further details: www.vintagecharmafternoonteas.co.uk.

"The whole point of this type of gingerbread is that it should be dark, sticky, treacly and very gingery. Thanks to the availability and popularity of ginger over the centuries, it's one of the most vintage of all vintage cakes, with an illustrious history stretching back to the medieval 'gingerbread fairs' that were held in many European countries".

JAMAICAN COCONUT, LIME AND RUM CAKE FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH

To mark Black History Month in the UK that came to an end yesterday, I made this zesty, moist loaf cake that has a delicious taste of the Caribbean.
