The Day for Change…
It was an early start for me this morning. All 16 sporting stands at our Garlands venue have now been completely reset with brand-new targets ahead of practice on Friday and Saturday, and the 100 registered event on Sunday.
I’m often asked about target setting—how, why, and when I set targets the way I do. For me, it comes down to three simple principles:
* It should not be a test of eyesight.
* It should not be a test of quick transition reaction time.
* It should provide entertaining and enjoyable target combinations.
I always try to help the shooter. If the target flight is read correctly and the first shot is executed well, the gun should naturally be left in the right place to address the second target. I prefer to rely on good trap setting and making the most of the terrain rather than forcing shooters completely out of position. Once that happens, it often becomes more of a reaction and eyesight test than a shooting challenge.
That doesn’t mean we can’t be a little devious! Subtle twists and turns in a clay’s flight, especially over undulating ground, can make all the difference. And one thing to always remember—a flat field isn’t always as flat as it looks! 😁
Looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend.
