'Hendre'r Mynydd' - The Rhigos Road, Treherbert.
Is this the oldest "settee" in Wales and beyond?

Hendre'r Mynydd (meaning "old mountain settlement" or "summer home") is a notable Iron Age to Roman-era settlement located at the head of the Rhondda Fawr valley near Blaenrhondda. Excavated in the early 20th century, the site revealed ancient stone circles, pottery, and iron artifacts, indicating human habitation dating from the 1st to 3rd Century AD.
Key Historical Aspects of Hendre'r Mynydd:
Archaeological Findings: Excavations by the Rhondda Naturalists' Society in the 1920s discovered pottery, iron, and leather items, confirming its status as a significant prehistoric settlement.
Purpose: The site is believed to have been a "hafod" or summer dwelling, used by early settlers to keep livestock on high ground during warmer months.
Location: Situated high above the town of Blaenrhondda, the site is now close to a parking area often used by hikers and offers a glimpse into early pre-industrial life.
Significance: It serves as a reminder of early human history in the area, pre-dating the intense 19th-century coal mining era that later defined the Rhondda valleys.

The site is a Scheduled Monument, preserving the remains of the iron age settlement for historical study.
