You might be surprised to hear I was anything BUT excited - I was flipping terrified.

Not only that, I also felt a weird sadness at leaving my old job behind. Including the certainty and stability that came with it.

Ten years of working hard so someone else could achieve their dreams. It felt like such a waste. It was like a period of mourning that lasted (I want to say) about 2 weeks or so.

November marks 8 years since I first went to Flower School to keep my sister company. 8 years deep into this obsession that’s become my life.

In those 8 years, I’ve surpassed so many goals and been on the biggest self-development journey ever 😂 one that I know is ongoing for the rest of my life 🫶🏻

Being Self-Employed isn’t for everyone and that’s cool. But if you’re doing a job you don’t love inside out and back to front, don’t write off the possibility of doing something that sets your soul on fire.

Eight years ago, I had no idea that keeping my sister company at Flower School would lead me here.

I’m not saying it’s been easy, and I’m definitely not the same person I was back then. But I am so proud of the life I’ve built, the person I’ve become, and the fact that I was brave enough to give it a go ♥️

Today I flowered up my second wedding of the weekend. And it was an absolute stunner 🍂

Then I came home, took a long bubble bath 🛀 did my skincare and popped a chicken in the oven ready for roast dinner 😋

And for the rest of this week…I have very little to do. Just some bits and pieces mixed in with a haircut, coffee catch ups and a spa day - all before Beginner Flower School on Saturday.

Back when I worked in finance, the Sunday Scaries used to hit me hard. A little niggle in the back of my mind. A whole new week stretching out in front of me, with low-key dread for what it may bring.

And now…? My life is a DREAM I never knew was possible back then. I rest when I want, I work when I want. I consider myself very lucky - but I work hard too. I just don’t have to work quite so much (and making money DEFINITELY feels easier!)

The cherry on the cupcake is this - thanks to Cardiff Flower School, countless women have made this change as well. Left their old jobs behind and became full-time florists. With all the freedom, creativity and loveliness that comes with it ♥️

The M&S Christmas catalogue always gets me SO EXCITED for the festive season 🥰🎄

If I were to ask you how much profit your business has made this year…

Would you be able to tell me?

A - yep, off the top of my head

B - yes, but I’d need to check the figures first

C - nope!

And if you picked C, don’t worry - you’re definitely not alone.

But you do need to know.

Because knowing your turnover is one thing.

Knowing what’s actually left after you’ve paid for your flowers, wages, fuel, rent, insurance, subscriptions, equipment, tax and all the other costs of running your business?

✨That’s the number that matters✨

You can be busy, have a full diary and have money coming into your bank account every week…

…and still not be making the profit you think you are.

This is something I see so many florists struggling with - the business side of the business.

And I get it.

Most of us started because we love flowers.

Nobody picked up their first pair of floristry scissors thinking, I can’t wait to learn about profit margins and spreadsheets! 😂

But if you want floristry to be a business, and not just an expensive hobby, you need to understand your numbers.

And this is where I can help you...

As an ex-finance girly, I’m well practiced in numbers, percentages, profit and pricing to make your business successful.

So…
No matter if you answered A, B or C, it’s ALWAYS worth reviewing the financial side of your business.

Because you need to be brave - and know where to go from here.
