'Arts and culture are not an optional extra, but foundational to Welsh identity.'

In her recent after-dinner speech, on receiving a Fellowship of the Learned Society of Wales / Cymdeithas Ddysgedig Cymru, Principal Helena Gaunt reflects on the role of arts and culture. ‘Culture - ordinary, extraordinary, shared - has the power to heal, to connect, to empower, and to shape a more humane future for us all.’

It’s a message that feels especially important right now, and one that continues to shape the work we do at the College every day.

‘Nid dewis ychwanegol yw poeni am y celfyddydau a’r diwylliant yma, maen nhw’n elfennau sylfaenol i hunaniaeth Gymreig.’

Yn ei haraith wedi cinio ddiweddar, ar ôl derbyn Cymrodoriaeth Cymdeithas Ddysgedig Cymru, myfyriodd y Prifathro Helena Gaunt ar rôl celfyddydau a diwylliant. ‘Mae gan ddiwylliant – cyffredin, anghyffredin, a rennir – y pŵer i wella, i gysylltu, i rymuso, ac i lunio dyfodol mwy dynolgar i bob un ohonom.’

Mae’n neges sy’n teimlo’n arbennig o bwysig ar hyn o bryd, ac un sy’n parhau i siapio’r gwaith rydym yn ei wneud yn y Coleg bob dydd.
