Item 003 — Zero B – Lock Up

A record that became part of a legendary night.
I was tipped off to pick this up from Music Power in Ilford and handed it on white label. Back then there was no internet – records travelled purely through word of mouth between DJs and record shops.
Later that same night it was dropped at Eclipse in Cambridge and the reaction on the floor said everything.
Looking back now, it’s incredible to think how much impact this record would go on to have across the underground dance scene.

The Music Power record shop in Ilford.

During the early rave years, record shops were the centre of the underground dance music scene. DJs travelled from all over to search for the latest vinyl, often hearing about new releases through word of mouth or a phone call from the shop.

Music Power was owned by Nick Power, with Lloyd Anthony and Dean Savonne working behind the counter supplying DJs with new records as they arrived.

Shops like this were a vital link between record distributors, DJs, pirate radio and the dancefloor. Many DJs passed through those doors looking for the next tune to play that weekend.

The second image shows the shopping centre where the shop was located upstairs on the upper level.

This bag carried records, headphones and spare Stanton 500 cartridges for the Technics through record shops, radio stations, clubs and warehouse parties.
Sometimes the stories aren’t just in the music,,, they’re in the things that travelled with it.

DJ Ian Stratton Archive

Before a warehouse party, the real work often started earlier in the day — digging for records.

Back in the late 80s and early 90s, DJs were constantly travelling to record shops looking for fresh vinyl.

Sometimes records were bought at midday and played that very same night in a warehouse rave.

That was the excitement of the era.

Brand new music, straight from the record shop and onto the dancefloor.

You could see the newness of the vinyl — the shine of the grooves where it had just been pressed, the static making it cling to the paper sleeve, and the smell… the fresh smell of new vinyl was something else.

Sometimes promos would even arrive through the post from record labels or distributors before the record was officially released. Getting those early copies and trying them out on a sound system was pure energy.

Bunker Warehouse Sessions
Cambridge – Early 1990s (1990–1993)

Back when the underground scene was raw.

Warehouse spaces packed with people, heavy sound systems and fresh vinyl being played every week.

The music was deep, sub-bass driven and completely underground.

Nothing commercial. Just DJs bringing the newest records they could find.

Sometimes records bought earlier that day would be played that same night.

Thousands of people would fill the warehouse and when the bass kicked in you could feel the vibrations travelling through the walls of the building.

Those nights were something special.
