Never thought this would be what I do for a living…. But I’m so glad it is!

When I was little and someone asked me what I wanted to do when I grew up, I used to say “perform on Broadway”. I didn’t quite get there, and I still have trauma from the disaster that was my Shakespeare monologue during my RADA audition (when I say the word ‘horrendous’ though 🫠).

I was lucky enough to do some professional singing for a few years and then qualify as a dance teacher. Little did I know that that would all lead me to shaking maracas in my own singing & movement sessions in care settings for the elderly, people living with dementia, and adults with additional learning.

Life doesn’t always turn out the way you thought it would, sometimes what you’re meant to do finds you without you looking for it 💫

Care setting activity coordinators, your to-do list seems to be never ending and your time extremely limited- I see you! 👋🏼

The last thing you need is to be searching for an activity provider who you can trust to bring a fun, energetic, interactive singing & movement session that your residents will really connect with. That’s me where I come in! 🙋🏻‍♀️

I’m Suzy and I’m extremely passionate about bringing the joy and freedom of music and movement to care/ residential homes, community groups, and adults with additional needs, within Greater Manchester 🎶

Easily the BEST thing about what I do 🫶🏼

Meet Bob- a wonderfully happy chap and an absolute gentleman. He loves a sing and dance, copies all the steps, and brings his playful and cheeky side to every one of our sessions. After this gorgeous moment, he said, “Thank you for the dance, kind lady” and bowed his head 🥹

It really is such a rewarding thing to meet all these fantastic members of the elderly community, and to see them living well and thriving in their care setting 💚

After going through my nanna living with vascular dementia and her being in a care home for several years, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what going into care homes to deliver singing & movement sessions would look like. Here are just a few things I’ve learnt along the way since launching Melodies & Memories….

🎶 It’s okay if a resident becomes emotional during a song. It’s cathartic for them to go through that emotion and be given a safe space to remember a precious moment/ time/ person that they may link that particular song to.

😑 It’s okay if some residents aren’t participating in, or don’t look like they’re enjoying, the session. I’ve had many residents not express a single smile or copied one step during the session, to the point where I’ve panicked internally and thought “Oh no, they’re not feeling this at all 😩”, but they always come up to me afterwards and say “I really enjoyed that!”. They may not always feel comfortable or confident attempting to copy steps or sing along to the lyrics of a song, but they are taking it all in and enjoying it their own way.

😴 It’s okay if a resident wants to have a little snooze during my sessions- I don’t take it personally! The exercise songs we did may have tired them out, they may not have had a good night’s sleep the night before, they may be feeling slightly under the weather, or they may just be a bit full from a delicious lunch! (We’ve all been there- give me a big bowl of pasta and I’m in a food coma for at least a good 2 hours afterwards 🥱)

🤬 It’s okay if a resident uses ‘choice’ language with me- there were all kinds of different characters in my nanna’s care home over the years, all living with different stages of dementia, and it’s nothing I haven’t heard before! Plus I may have just caught them on a day where they really REALLY don’t fancy waving a floaty scarf around, and that’s their prerogative to refuse said floaty scarf 😂

Each session is a chance to learn more, develop my skills, and most importantly to grow as a person. And I’m very grateful for that 😌

Music has a beautiful way of bringing people together 🎵

My singing and movement session with Enhancing Lives on Tuesday was filled with laughter, rhythm, confidence, and connection. So grateful to share these moments with such an incredible group of people, and to witness the joy that music can inspire in every person 🫶🏼

It’s so important to me to make every participant in my sessions feel seen, included, and celebrated 💚

If you work with adults with additional needs and are looking for a new, interactive activity, get in touch by email at [email protected] I’d love to come and deliver an introductory session for your group 😊

I’m so glad one of the amazing carers, Beth, caught this clip of Jean singing away to The Beatles song, “Eight Days a Week”. Such a precious moment 🥹🫶🏼

I include simple singalongs within our sessions, as not only does a good group singalong release ‘happy hormones’ like endorphins and serotonin, but it can also help with cognition, memory, and speech.

At the end of the song, Jean turned to me and said, “It doesn’t get better than this does it” 🫶🏼

A little round up of Q2. I managed to cram in quite a lot 😅 …. To start with, a return to Hewlett Court with these lovely ladies 🫶🏼

Easter- I was not messing around on the hot cross bun front 🐷🤤

A gorgeous session at Abbeywood with Judy Garland as one of our reminiscence photos 📸

A lush long weekend in Valencia. Ate the tapas, and drank the local cocktail they call ‘Agua De Valencia’ - 10/10 for both 👌🏼

Got my creative on at The Founders Table | Women Networking Group We painted our own plant pots and took the time to reflect on how our businesses could bloom in Q2 🎨

Sunny stroll ☀️ The simplicity of steps in the sunshine with blue skies and green grass makes me so happy. Maybe throw in some M&S picky bits for a picnic 👌🏼

Meeting some wonderful relatives of the residents at Rose Court. They are so supportive and encouraging of their loved ones during our sessions. It’s such a tough time supporting an elderly loved one, particularly a loved one living with dementia, yet the relatives always give their time and energy to help their loved ones to participate and get the most out of the session 💚

I don’t need to caption this do I?! INCREDIBLE ❤️

Back at Queen’s Lodge in Blackburn where they had just finished a gorgeous refurb job inside 👏🏼

May bank holiday weekend spent in Rutland where I wanted to buy this house 😍

My cat, Rafa, thinking that when I say “I have to work now”, what I actually mean is “come and sit on me for cuddles and prevent me doing any work” 🐈‍⬛ I wouldn’t mind but this photo doesn’t show how much of a chunk he is and he plonks himself down on your knee with a right thud 😂

Very cautiously making friends with this gorgeous show horse. I couldn’t deal with her little plaits 🥹

Anne, absolute legend at one of the care homes I visit- she’s always so happy, polite, and smiley, but with a razor sharp wit. She’s pretty much one of the staff members too- she knows everything that’s going on and gets to have her say about it, it wouldn’t surprise me if she sat in on staff meetings 😂 She’s awesome 😌

Play time at Good Life Festival in Leeds 💃🏻 I’ve been to many a festival in my time, but have to say that a day festival will do me these days (she’

I will never stop harping on about how incredible our elderly community is! So many times they can be overlooked when, in fact, we can learn so much from them. Strength, resilience, patience, determination, heart. They inspire me every day 💚
