What's not to love about working for yourself?

This week has once again been a real mixture of work and pleasure, although I have to say, the weather has definitely been lacking in the pleasure department! 🌧️ If you woke up from a coma with no idea what month it was, I'm not sure the British weather would give you any clues at the moment.

Alongside my usual singing teaching commitments, I had the privilege of delivering a funeral service for a friend's mum who sadly passed away. Being trusted to support friends and families during such an important and emotional life event is always incredibly humbling.

I also spent time meeting with a lovely family as I prepare to create a Celebration of Life for their loved one, who reached the remarkable age of 97 and was still living independently at home. What an incredible life and what a privilege to help tell their story.

On the business development front, I attended an induction session with NetworkIN and met with a new Funeral Director. Building relationships face-to-face is so important; people like to know who they're working with, and those personal connections really matter.

Outside of work, I managed to fit in a few things for myself too. I treated myself to a visit to The Little Chapel Hair and Beauty for a much-needed pedicure, started a new programme at the gym in Branston Golf & Country Club, enjoyed lunch with friends, and spent time planting up my newly landscaped garden. 🌸🌿

One of the joys of being self-employed is the variety. No two weeks are ever the same, and whilst it can be challenging at times, it certainly never gets boring!

How has your week been? Has it been all work, all play, or a mixture of both?

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend. 😊

This past week has been a real reminder of just how many emotions we can experience in the space of a few days.

How well do you manage your emotions from one day to the next?

My week has included:
✨ Enthusiasm ; 😊 Enjoyment ; 🎉 Excitement ; 💪 Resilience ;
🎯 Determination ; 😢 Sadness ; 🤔 Reflection ; ⚖️ Ambivalence
🙏 Humility ; 😬 Anxiety ; ❤️ Thankfulness

The week began on Bank Holiday Monday with a wonderful day in the sunshine in Stratford-upon-Avon, completing a Mystery Guide trail, through to Tuesday, battling my way around a golf course in temperatures exceeding 30 degrees. ☀️⛳

Wednesday was a day of stark contrasts. I received the sad news that a family member had lost their battle with MS. Provided 4 hours of singing tuition and had a very positive meeting with a new Funeral Director.

I also enjoyed some personal wins. A few more pounds lost at Slimming World and, I was delighted to receive the Minute Maestro award at NetworkIN . 🏆

I ended the week in contrasts - having the privilege of officiating a service for a lovely family whose loved one had enjoyed a happy 80 years. Whilst then also having some fun at a Barn Dance as part of the Ashby Arts Festival. 🎻💃

And throughout all of this, I've also been overseeing a complete garden transformation. Anyone who likes to be in control will understand the emotions that come with trusting others to bring your vision to life! 🌿😄

Life, business, family, friendships, health, loss, achievement, gratitude and uncertainty can all sit side by side in a single week.

Perhaps that's the point. We don't just experience one emotion at a time. We navigate many of them simultaneously, and that's what makes us human.

What emotion has defined your week?

🎵 Have you ever thought about what music you would want played at your funeral? 🎵

One of the most special parts of being a Celebrant is helping families choose the music for the celebration of a loved one’s life ❤️

For some people, the choices are very clear and personal. Others find it incredibly difficult to know what to choose. Ultimately, what matters most is selecting music that meant something to that person or truly reflects their life, personality, and memories.

The variety of music I hear at services is always amazing 🎶 From the stirring sound of the bagpipes playing Scotland the Brave, to classical favourites, musical theatre, choral works, piano instrumentals, and of course popular songs from every era, everything from The Shadows to S*x Pistols!

It does make you think though… would you know what music your loved ones would really want? Would they know yours? 🤔

Perhaps it’s one of those conversations worth having before the time comes. Food for thought 💭

Let me know what your choices would be .......

So I’ve just called a restaurant to book a table for 20 people on a Thursday evening in August for a birthday celebration 🎉🍾 … only to be told they don’t take bookings for groups that size during August 🤷‍♀️

I have to say, this isn’t the first time I’ve come across this situation, and quite frankly, it baffles me 🤔

Why would any pub or restaurant turn away guaranteed business and the opportunity to make money on food and drinks? Especially on what would usually be considered a quieter midweek evening 🍷🍻

From a customer’s point of view, it just doesn’t seem to make sense to me.

I’d genuinely be interested to hear from anyone in the hospitality industry who can explain the reasoning behind this policy, as I’m sure there may be factors I haven’t considered. 🙂

The role of a Funeral Celebrant is certainly not a walk in the park.

It means supporting families at one of the most difficult times in their lives, listening carefully, and taking the time to truly understand the person who has passed so their story and spirit are honoured in the most meaningful way.

Moments like this remind me exactly why I do what I do, and what a real privilege it is to be part of a family’s final farewell.

Receiving feedback like this is absolute confirmation that I’m on the right path:

“Can I thank you on behalf of Mum, the family and myself for the beautiful and dignified manner in which you led the ceremony on Tuesday. The word my mum used to describe it was ‘perfect’. Whilst nobody ever wants or enjoys a funeral, we all felt that you captured the spirit of Dad, which was a great comfort.”

Grateful to be trusted with such an important role 💙

Being a good funeral celebrant isn’t measured by how many services you’ve taken. 🤍

Yes, experience matters. Every service brings learning, depth, and understanding and that is truly valuable. But for me, this work is about how you show up.

It’s about listening carefully when a family shares the story of someone they love.

Holding space when emotions are raw and words feel heavy.
Honouring a life not just with facts, but with feeling, care, and authenticity.

Real success in this role lives in the quality of what you deliver.
In how a family feels when they sit down with you.
In how those attending the service experience the farewell.
In knowing that someone’s life has been truly seen, heard, and represented.

That’s why I write every service from a blank page. Every person is different, and their story deserves to be told with the same individuality and respect. People feel the difference when a service is created with intention, presence, and heart.

I’m deeply honoured to support families through one of life’s most difficult moments, and I treat every service with the care it deserves because every service matters.

If you’re looking for a celebrant who will take the time to truly listen and create a farewell that feels personal, meaningful, and authentic, I’d be honoured to support you.

Feel free to message me to have a gentle, no pressure conversation. 🌿

💍 Planning a wedding? Looking for something a little more you?

If you’re recently engaged or in the middle of planning your big day, you may want to consider a Celebrant‑led wedding — a ceremony that’s personal, meaningful, and completely tailored to your story.

Unlike traditional ceremonies, celebrant‑led weddings give you the freedom to choose your words, your rituals, your music, and the way your love is celebrated. No scripts. No restrictions. Just a ceremony that truly reflects who you are as a couple.

✨ I’ll be exhibiting at Osmaston Park on Sunday 12th April ✨

Come along for a relaxed chat, ask questions, and find out how a celebrant‑led ceremony can make your wedding unforgettable. Whether you’re just starting out or refining the details, I’d love to meet you and hear your plans.

Pop it in your diary and come and say hello — your ceremony should be just as special as the day itself 💕
