Let’s talk wedding makeup… 🪞✨

Your wedding makeup is one of those areas that does not get talked about much when it comes to sustainability, but it is worth a few conscious choices if it matters to you 💜

The reality is that a full wedding makeup session can generate a surprising amount of unnecessary waste, and with a few simple conversations beforehand, it really doesn't have to.

Before we go any further, we want to be clear. This is not about compromise, telling you how to have your makeup done, or impacting hygiene in any way. It is simply sharing a few ideas if this is something you care about and want to implement on your day.

Here are some of our tips:

💄 Talk to your MUA before the wedding. Ask about the brands they use. Are they cruelty free? Free of microplastics? Suitable for sensitive skin? A good makeup artist will be happy to have this conversation and many are already making conscious choices with their kit.

💄 Use your own mascara on the day rather than a disposable wand from your MUA's kit. Or ask at your trial what they recommend, buy a full size one, and keep using it long after the wedding.

💄 Bring your own lipstick. You probably already have a favourite, so there is no need for a little plastic brush thrown away after one use.

💄 Rethink the touch up bag. Rather than sample sizes bought specially for the day, bring your own products that you already love. After your trial you will know exactly what you want close by, so invest in full size versions you will actually use as part of your normal routine afterwards.

Are faux flowers the sustainable choice for your wedding? 🌿 We hate to break it to you, but probably not.

This is a question that came up at one of our recent events, and we wanted to answer it properly. So we turned to Harriet at , one of our accredited members and a sustainable florist and environmentalist who has done the research so we don't have to.

Here is the honest answer:

Most artificial flowers are made from plastic based synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon - both derived from petroleum. They do not biodegrade. When they eventually end up in landfill, they break down into microplastics that get into our soil, our waterways, and our food systems. They are quite literally forever flowers, just not in the way the marketing suggests.

They cannot be recycled either. Harriet looked at over ten retailer websites selling artificial flowers and not one included information on what they are actually made from — making recycling practically impossible even if the infrastructure existed.

So when are faux flowers okay? If a venue already has them, or you can hire existing pieces from a stylist, that is fine. You are not adding to the problem. But buying new artificial flowers for a single day is one of the least sustainable floristry choices you can make.

The good news is that the alternative is so much more beautiful anyway. Seasonal British flowers, arranged by a florist who actually knows and loves them, will always outshine plastic. They have scent, texture, and a quality that faux flowers simply cannot replicate. And a good sustainable florist will make even a small budget go a long way.

We are going to say the quiet part out loud 💚

Wedding culture has gradually added more and more to the “must have” list, and a lot of it is stuff that ends up in a bin by the end of the night. We are not here to tell you what your wedding should look like — but we do think it is worth asking the question: do we actually want this, or do we just think we are supposed to have it?

Imported flowers flown in from thousands of miles away when British seasonal blooms are more beautiful anyway. Stationery on every place setting that gets left behind. Balloons that end up in the ocean. Favours that go straight in the bag and are never seen again.

None of these things make your wedding more special. They just make it more wasteful.

The most memorable weddings are the ones with intention behind them — where every choice means something and nothing is there just because it felt like it should be.

Hot take: bridesmaid proposal boxes have got a little out of hand…

They are such a sweet idea. A little moment to ask your favourite people to stand beside you on one of the biggest days of your life. We are absolutely here for that.

But if we're being honest, most bridesmaid proposal boxes follow the same formula. A candle, a face mask, some personalised socks, a claw clip, a mini prosecco. All bought, packaged, wrapped, and shipped, most of it used once or not at all.

The good news is that the gesture doesn't have to change. Just the way you do it.

A handwritten letter saying exactly why you want them by your side will mean more than anything you could ever put in a box. A bunch of fresh British seasonal flowers from a local florist or grower is beautiful, thoughtful, and won't end up in landfill. A small gift that actually means something to that specific person — a book you know they'll love, a local candle from a maker you both like — will be treasured far longer than a generic proposal kit.

The ask is the meaningful part. It always was. The stuff around it is just stuff 🌿

MEMBER SHOUTOUT // Crockwell Farm 🌾🌿

Nestled in the South Northamptonshire countryside with uninterrupted views as far as the eye can see, is widely regarded as one of the most stunning wedding venues in the county. This family-run farm has been hosting weddings since 2002, offering exclusive use over three days so every couple gets the time and space to truly savour every moment.

It’s all about protecting our local environment. Even "biodegradable" latex can take as long as an oak leaf to break down (up to six months!), and the Marine Conservation Society recently collected over 1,359 balloons from UK beaches in just one year. That's more than three times the number found just fifteen years earlier.
