Popped in to the newly opened “The Big Cheese” on Broughton Street to pick up some Baron Bigod (Geoff’s all-time fav!) Couldn’t resist an English blue as well. It’s one we’ve not seen before - just a pity I can’t for the life of me remember its name… 🙄😂 Also an organic Italian olive oil which is really smooth and buttery - you can try before you buy.

Lovely selection of accompaniments to complement the cheese, a small selection of wine, very knowledgeable and friendly staff and it’s only a few minutes walk from the back of John Lewis.

Oh, and they will be opening a room soon at the back for tastings and events - sign us up now! 😋🧀🍾🥖

Lovely late lunch at the newly opened Chez Bernard in Leith! 😋

Delicious, straightforward French bistro food and terrific value - we had 6 oysters, a bread basket, quiche with salad, a mini cheese & charcuterie platter, fries, a side salad and a carafe of house wine for £67.

Add in amazing service from the wonderful Isla, plus the fact that it’s dog-friendly (managed by the gorgeous Rocky lounging in his basket!) it’s certainly worth a visit!

(Oh, and it’s two minutes walk from the quirky Carriers Quarters and Nobles by Bellfield pubs if you fancy a pre/post tipple…! 🍻🍷🥂)

Can you believe this was five years ago?!? What fun we had with dinner parties, birthdays, food and wine tastings, discos…. Loved every (very stressful) minute and so happy we met you all! 😍

Three very different, but really delicious meals, in Edinburgh recently! 😋

First up was The Scottish Malt Whisky Society in Leith*. Comforting dishes cooked with real care. And of course, accompanied by an incredible selection of malts!

Second was our first visit to Nishiki in Morrison Street. Not long opened but it’s already received an award from Conde Nast. Light, fresh and beautifully fragrant dishes with a sake menu to boot. What’s not to like?!?

And finally, the new Cottage - formerly The Gardener’s Cottage just down from Royal Terrace. Still the same tiny open kitchen space, still the same shared tables and high quality cooking. Not an ingredient you see on many menus these days, but the hogget was absolutely fantastic. 👌

A Black Forest adventure! Breisach (beautiful), Titisee (touristy) and Freiburg - (absolutely fan dabi dozi!)

As ever, Germany did not disappoint. 😍 Such a wonderful country to explore - and there’s a hell of a lot more to it than the usual tourist attractions or Christmas markets. Laid back vibe, totally into biodynamic and organic food, amazing people, beautiful weather (some of the year!) and only a short hop from Edinburgh.

Geoff did his usual of getting in as many Bratwurst and Schnitzels that could be possibly be eaten in a week, while I looked for some salads and wine…! 😂

Total highlights of the week were:

- The Abel vegetarian restaurant where you help yourself and pay by the weight of your plate. The spectacularly fresh seasonal asparagus was absolutely delicious.
- Drexlers, a Michelin guide restaurant where we had an incredible dish made from the little-used kohl rabi and a purée of the greens - outstanding!
- Alte watches wine bar where their speciality is frozen Reisling and local wine - Kalte Sofie- quite simply the most delicious adult slushie I’ve ever tasted! You can also enjoy small wines by the glass from all of €3 or 250ml bottle for just €7 - so disappointed we only found it on our last night!!

Delicious birthday lunch at dogstarleith. Small, ingredient-led plates beautifully cooked with care. (You can sit at the counter and watch the chefs at work.) Some unusual seasonal choices like chicken of the woods, surf clams and raw Cinderwood radishes. Might not be to everyone’s taste but we thought it was really rather good! 😋🍄‍🟫🫜🍷🍺

Ahh, beautiful Bohemia! Well worth going off the beaten track from Prague’s city centre and venturing further afield! Add in the amazing spa town of Karlovy Vary and Plzen and you’ve got the perfect Czech “triangle” of contrasts. And who doesn’t like a glass of Molvanian wine priced at 35-40 Koruna (check out today’s exchange rate!!)

After a run of decidedly disappointing meals recently at Michelin-recommended restaurants, 😕 I was really hoping that the newly listed Lucky Yu in Edinburgh would break the trend - and it absolutely smashed it!! 💥👌

A fabulously light bao bun with crispy cauliflower, delicious cured trout and hot horseradish plus a crunchy salad with a beautifully balanced dressing - if I hadn’t have been stuffed I’d have ordered another three dishes from the “Lucky Hour” menu just for the hell of it!

A full menu is also available - can’t wait to go back and sample the rest (with more sake!)🍶🍣 😋

Ooh la la, Lyon - quelle ville fabuleuse! We walked over 45km in just five days, explored every corner and it was just amazing! 😍

Beautiful architecture with not just one, but two rivers running through it, the city is so laid back, unpretentious and far more enjoyable than Paris. Add in sunshine, incredibly friendly people, markets, gourmet shops and thousands of restaurants/bouchons and wine bars, what’s not to like!

Oh, and it just happened to be the 9th annual Lyon beer festival - cheers! 🍻🥗🧀🍷🍾🍅🥖🦪
