Brilliant competition. I have many trees I love. Are we limited to one entry?

Tell us which local trees you treasure.

Enter our Treasured Tree photo competition and win The Woodland Trust vouchers.

Simply take a photo of a tree you treasure within the Budleigh and beyond area, tell us why the tree is important to you and where it is.

You can send it to us on Facebook or by email [email protected]

You've got plenty of time, competition closes Friday 30 October 2026, so that we can capture our trees throughout the seasons.

The winning entries will be announced and on display at our National Tree Week event on Saturday 5 December at Peter Hall, Budleigh Salterton.

Please see the poster for more details.

Did you know what a snag tree is?

What is a snag?

If you’ve walked down Granary Lane in the last year, you’ve probably seen one but may not have realised what it is!

A snag is a tree in the final stages of its life. It can be a dead standing tree or a dying tree. The tree’s life might be at an end, but its usefulness to wildlife is about to peak:

Dead wood provides specialist homes for insects as well as fungi.
Those insects are a food source for birds, bats and other small mammals.
These creatures take advantage of hollows or holes in the tree for shelter.
In turn, these smaller residents are food for larger mammals and birds of prey.
Dead and decaying trees are a vital part of a wood’s biodiversity. That’s why we leave plenty on our sites. Removing dead wood from woodland removes an important part of its biodiversity.

On , we're celebrating one of Devon’s least known landscapes – the internationally important blanket bogs of Dartmoor. 💚

These bogs are wildlife havens, where you might find toads and frogs as well as carnivorous plants like sundews and butterwort, which prey on bog insects. 🐸

Have you got a waterlogged or boggy bit of garden? You can make it work for nature and provide a valuable habitat by turning it into a bog garden!
