YOU COULDN'T MAKE IT UP! ππ
Bancroft's first home fixture of the season delivered everything you could want from grassroots rugby β drama, determination, two senior debuts, a hat-trick hero and a birthday boy who came to watch but ended up playing!
Three late withdrawals meant Bancroft started with just 14 players, and when Lee Irvine was forced off injured after only seven minutes, the hosts faced the daunting prospect of playing the remainder of the half with just 13 against Thames' 15.
But Bancroft weren't about to roll over.
Vice-captain Toby Weingarth opened the scoring with a magnificent individual try, powering through three defenders before converting his own effort.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, Bancroft defended superbly, with senior debutant Eren Ozelci producing three outstanding covering tackles to deny Thames almost certain scores. Fellow debutant Jack Fenwick was equally impressive, chasing everything, making important tackles and putting the visitors under constant pressure.
Thames eventually made their extra numbers count, taking a narrow 10β7 lead into half-time.
π₯ SECOND-HALF DRAMA
The arrival of Tony How restored Bancroft to 14 players, and within 30 seconds of the restart, Toby produced a moment of magic.
Breaking through the Thames defence, he chipped ahead at full pace, collected his own kick and touched down in the corner to put Bancroft back in front.
Thames responded with a try of their own to lead 15β12, but Bancroft refused to surrender.
With numbers still stretched, birthday boy Chris Edwards, who had originally arrived as a spectator, decided he'd seen enough and pulled on his boots to join the action!
Bancroft finally reached 15 players, only for captain George Reynolds to depart injured shortly afterwards. Back to 14!
With ten minutes remaining, Bancroft's pressure finally paid off. A well-worked move from a five-metre scrum saw Eren Ozelci cross beneath the posts for a richly deserved **try on his senior debut**.
Toby converted to restore Bancroft's lead at 19β15.
And the best was yet to come.
Reading a Thames pass perfectly, Toby intercepted at full pace and raced away beneath the posts to complete a superb hat-trick, adding the conversion to seal a memorable victory.
