This year’s Pride message is a little different from previous years. Pride has always been both a celebration and a protest, however in the current UK climate it is hard to celebrate, especially if you are trans.
This Pride month it is more important than ever to join in the protest and help try and stop the impending doom facing not only trans people, but non-binary folk, the wider LGBTQ+ community and every non-conforming women - all as a result of the publication of the horrifically harmful EHRC code of practice. This statutory guidance would usher in an unacceptable era for LGBTQ+ rights in the UK and encourage gender policing and lawfare. The government itself acknowledges that this will put trans and non-conforming people at risk.
The situation is dire, and this message is a call to action. Do not call yourself an “ally” if you are blindly looking the other way. Being an ally isn’t passive, it means actively supporting the community when we are under fire. Now is the time trans+ people need you to stand with them and shout as loudly as you possibly can. We also want to ask all the companies and businesses that have changed their logo this month in ‘support’ of the LGBTQ+ community what they are actually doing to support, beyond just changing their logo for more likes on social media, and encourage them to do something more meaningful.
Here are a couple of things you can do to help:
Any ally who is a cis woman can sign the Not In Our Name (NION) open letter. NION are a collective of women who reject the weaponisation of their identities to justify discrimination, and who want a focus on women’s safety in the areas they are most at risk, rather than the creation of false threats. See the link in the comments for details to do this - it only takes a few moments.
For all ally’s, we strongly urge you to email your MP to demand that they reject the code. There are only 19 days left (at time of posting this) for a motion to be put forward in parliament to do this, so the emails need to go to your MP now. Scottish Trans have made it very easy to do this using the link in the comments - again, this only takes a few moments, although you can spend longer on it if you have a personal message you want to put across. The more personal the message the more pressure on your MP to actually do something about it.
To all LGBTQ+ allies, PLEASE show your support in a meaningful way, and please do it now. If you have already done the actions above, please share them with all your friends and family and encourage them to do the same.
