Hello forrozeiro, let us introduce you to Iury Batista the bass guitarist playing with Mesteinho

*Iury Batista*

Originally from Fortaleza, Ceará, Iury began his journey in music at the age of 15, discovering the bass guitar when he stepped in for another musician during a performance. Captivated by the depth of the instrument’s sound, he soon received his first bass from his brother, drummer Paulinho Santos, and immersed himself in intensive study. His playing was shaped by influences such as Nico Assumpção, John Patitucci, Ron Carter, Christian McBride, and Arthur Maia.

At 16, he began formal studies with renowned local bassists Renato Campos and Miquéias dos Santos. Two years later, he met saxophonist and educator Márcio Resende, a key figure in his ongoing musical development. Quickly becoming a sought-after sideman, he started performing with a wide range of artists in Fortaleza and beyond.

Over the years, Iury has collaborated with major names in Brazilian and international music, including Arismar do Espírito Santo, Leo Gandelman, David Kikoski, Paulinho Moska, Chico César, Seu Jorge, Arnaldo Antunes, Otto, and Xênia França. He has appeared at festivals such as Choro Jazz (Jericoacoara), Jazz & Blues (Guaramiranga), and Mestres do Graves, and has been part of the International Summer Course at the Brasília School of Music (Civebra), where he studied with André Vasconcelos, Zeca Assumpção, Toni Botelho, Lula Galvão, and Alexandre Carvalho.

Currently, he is active in several instrumental groups, including Por Um Trio, Expresso 5, Márcio Resende Quarteto, Eloa Gonçalves Trio, Cuca Teixeira & Groove Reunion, and Henrique Mota Trio. His career reflects a deep commitment to music, combining technical mastery with a strong connection to Brazilian musical traditions.

Léo Rodrigues - percussionist from São Paulo, began his musical career in the samba and choro circles of the city of São Paulo. He studied tap dancing and, soon after, joined the group Trupe da Pé as a tap dancer and percussionist.

Early in his career, he was invited to join the FAAM Brazilian Orchestra. Founder of the Roda de Choro quartet, he has shared the stage with great names such as Toninho Ferragutti, Ricardo Herz, Nelson Ayres, Carlos Malta, Gabriel Grossi, Laércio de Freitas and Oswaldinho do Acordeon.

Since 2017, he has accompanied Mariana Aydar and, in 2018, he became a member of Bloco Forrozin, one of the biggest in the São Paulo carnival, which has hosted artists such as Criolo, Gilberto Gil, Maria Gadú, Elba Ramalho, Anastácia, Mart’nália, Roberta Sá, Céu, Juliette, among others.

He is the creator and director of Orquestra Platinelas de Pandeiro and is part of the project of pianist Fabio Torres (winner of the Latin Grammy) with the Havana Chamber Orchestra. He is also the creator of the Platinelas channel on YouTube and the Ebatuque app.

He currently accompanies the singer Mestrinho, with whom he has performed several national and international tours, including a historic performance at Rock in Rio 2024.

In 2024, he was invited to join Mariana Aydar and Mestrinho’s new project, being responsible for all the percussion on the Latin Grammy-winning album 2024. With innovation, dedication to music education and a deep passion for Brazilian percussion, Léo Rodrigues continues to leave his mark on music with authenticity and excellence.
