It's Windrush Week — a time to recognise the shoulders we stand on and the extraordinary achievements of the West Indian pioneers who helped change Britain for good.

Born and raised in Knowle West. Proudly of West Indian heritage. Proud of my Clarendon roots.

My parents came to Britain during the Windrush era, part of a generation that crossed oceans, overcame barriers and helped shape the Britain and Bristol we know today.

As a Knowle West Indian with proud Clarendon roots, I'm grateful for the sacrifices they made and the legacy they left behind.

Yesterday, on the eve of Windrush Week, Bristol proudly unveiled its first Civil Rights Mural.

Curated by Curiosity UnLtd, created by Bristol artist and brought to life with everyday people at Europe’s largest street art festival.

Inspired by Bristol’s unique history, legacy and responsibility, the mural honours those who lit the flame, those carrying it today, and those who will carry it forward. It marks another step in Bristol’s journey towards becoming the UK’s first Capital of Civil Rights by 2029.

It’s Day 7 — the final day of National UnEqual Pay Week. The reality is now undeniable.

On April 1st — Black men reach equal pay,
90 days into the year.

On April 6th — Black women reach equal pay,
96 days into the year.

The gender pay gap closes on February 15th.
For many, equal pay starts months into the year—
not on January 1st.

Nationally, the ethnicity pay gap is 19.1%.

In Bristol — the 7th most unequal core city in the UK — it rises to:
– 24.1% for Black men
– 26.1% for Black women
Across the UK, this costs £37bn every year.

Black professionals.
Same work.
Less pay.
Not OK.
Equal Pay
Today

In 1963, Bristol’s bus boycott ended the colour bar.
Raghbir Singh became the first bus driver of colour—
the price: less pay.
Today, this Pioneer’s Tax is embedded as an ethnicity pay gap.

To help topple this economic injustice, the Government has announced plans for mandatory ethnicity pay gap monitoring—while Bristol steps up to lead as the UK Capital of Civil Rights.
With this baseline in place, our approach is clear:

Measure it — Standardise ethnicity pay data
Report it — Publish the gap transparently
Act on it — Deliver data-driven strategies to close it.

While many enjoy Easter treats and time with family, for too many Black working women, today is no reward.

They are still working for less—
for the same work.

helped defeat the colour bar.
It’s the home of the Race Relations Act.
The dream was economic equality.
The reality is that, 60 years on, the gap remains.

Black working women still work 96 days unpaid before reaching pay parity.
That’s £37bn in unpaid wages to Black workers every year across the UK.

If you’re a Black professional in the UK,
There’s a Black pay gap of 19.1%.
You’re not getting the dough you deserve.

And if you live and work in Bristol — the UK’s 7th most unequal city for people of colour —
Black men are paid 24.1% less.
Black women are paid 26.1% less than their white colleagues.

Ironically, that means you’re fishing around for equal pay until:
April 1st, if you’re a Black man (April Fools’ Day)
April 6th, if you’re a Black woman (start of the new tax year).

So on National Unequal Pay Week, we demand that employers:
Record it.
Report it.

Today is the day Black professionals in the UK finally “catch up” to the earnings their white colleagues reached on 31 December.

That’s a 90‑day deficit built into the system.

📊 WHAT THE DATA SHOWS
National Black Pay Gap: 19.8%
Bristol Black Pay Gap: 24.1%
Black Women’s Pay Gap (Bristol): 26.5%
Annual UK Economic Loss: £34 Billion

If you’re of African Caribbean descent, you’ve effectively worked 90 days for free.

This isn’t an April Fools’ prank.
It’s a national injustice.

📣 BRISTOL, WE NEED LEADERSHIP
Mandatory ethnicity pay gap monitoring is coming — but monitoring doesn’t close gaps.

In 1963, Bristol’s Bus Boycott forced this city to confront the colour bar.
In 2026, the penalty hasn’t vanished.
It’s been professionalised into a pay gap.

Bristol’s civil rights legacy isn’t a story to admire — it’s a responsibility to carry.

Day 5 of our Race Equality Week Bulletin asks a direct question:

What legacy will today’s leaders choose to leave?

From May Tanner’s courage, to the return of the Paul Stephenson Lecture, to Martin Luther King III’s call for Bristol to lead with ambition — the direction is clear: History has given us the blueprint. Now it’s on us to deliver.

Bristol’s bid to become the UK Capital of Civil Rights demands action that goes beyond symbolism:

· Teaching inclusive histories
· Naming and addressing institutional racism
· Shifting who holds power and cultural influence
· Turning global expectation into measurable local change
