Lighthouse Support artists using digital technology & help people succeed in the creative & cultural industries.

Lighthouse is a Brighton-based arts charity that supports artists who use digital technology in their work and helps people find routes into and succeed within the creative and cultural industries. From our central Brighton venues, we offer education and talent development programmes, commission artists to make and present new work, and produce exhibitions, talks and residencies. We have two key talent development programmes for underrepresented young creatives - Lighthouse Young Creatives and Future Creative Leaders. In 2024 we opened the Lighthouse Project Space, Brighton’s first public, youth-led art space. It provides young creatives with a dynamic, multipurpose space to produce, create, perform, showcase and collaborate on artistic projects.

This week we have some Lighthouse Lore from Xavier Clarke who is a photographer and a creative partner that first discovered Lighthouse around 2015. The first time was to take portraits for a script/screen writing class, and since then Xavier has gone on to photograph many of our events.

Green spaces have become sanctuaries for people. For some, they are important meeting places and spaces for quiet belonging. 🌿

And this summer, Lighthouse’s Future Creative Leader Megan Lee (MBE) brought the Brighton & Hove community together through COMMON GROUND: a four-part outdoor gathering series spanning bird watching, spatial exploration, embodied movement, and texture printing and senses mapping.

Through these events, people discovered local wildlife with borrowed binocular from rsbp and mapped out their senses in Queen’s Park. COMMON GROUND showed us what happens when we remove the pressure to ‘participate’ and simply meet people where they’re at.

🌳In our latest Read, Watch, Listen, Meg chats about the inspiring book analogy that sparked her ideas for the project.

We cover ideas of reclaiming public green spaces in Kemptown with FLOW, intimate movement sessions with Faisal Salah, sensory mapping and local ecology with Aghh! Zine and bird spotting in our local areas with Meg.

Each session fostered intergenerational community.

Speak Out, Be Heard. What happens when you create a space to really listen?

Over the past year, our Town Halls have brought young people and the local community together to talk about the issues that matter most. They’ve been spaces where people have shared ideas and challenged existing norms. Together we’ve begun to imagine what change could (and should!) look like.

But why do we hold them?

At Lighthouse, we believe young people should have a say in the cultural spaces and opportunities created for them. Our Town Halls give us a space to listen and understand what’s missing. They help us to explore the barriers people face in having their voices heard, and allow us, as a publicly funded arts charity, to begin to think about how we can share power and decision-making differently.

Our latest Read, Watch, Listen shares what a Lighthouse Town Hall is, why we hold them and what we hope they can make possible.

And we don’t want the conversation to end when the Town Hall does.

Last week we launched , celebrating 40 (yeah, that’s right!) years of Lighthouse.

Over the next couple of months, we’ll be looking back on our four decades and sharing stories from the people who’ve been part of our journey.

This week, we’re shining a light on , a past Lighthouse Young Creatives (LYC) participant, who’s sharing a little bit of his Lighthouse lore. 💫

Through his time with Lighthouse, Benjahni has developed his creative practice, made new connections and discovered new opportunities.

A huge thank you to Benjahni for sharing his story with us, and to everyone who’s been part of the Lighthouse community over the past 40 years. 💛

Meet your speakers for the next Lighthouse Town Hall:

Kaia Allen-Bevan is an inspiring, award-winning advocate, entrepreneur, and creative recognised for her commitment to social justice and educational reform. Since 2019 (age 16), Kaia has been an active Racial Justice / Anti-Racism advocate, co-organising Brighton’s BLM peaceful demonstrations and founding Brighton Black Lived Matter. Her TEDx Talk was featured in Forbes Morocco as one that had a “Global Impact”.

Bobby Brown is a cultural leader and digital innovator working across technology, youth development, and the arts. With over a decade of experience, he focuses on equity, community-led change, and access to creative opportunities. As Programme Lead for Future Creative Leaders at Lighthouse, he has designed programmes that centre youth voice, decentralise leadership, and open pathways into creative industries.

What if a music event could leave you feeling a little lighter?

Back in July, eott.uk brought their first-ever day festival to the Earthship in Stanmer Park, bringing together music, art, mindfulness and a whole lot of community.

With sets from Changing Currents, Bushbby, Osquello, Lilly Wolfe, Diz Lyric and more, alongside mindful spaces from FCL, Mind, Body and Earth and a sensory room curated by FCL, Casey Galt, Lightworks explored what a more mindful music space could look (and feel) like.
