Lighthouse

Lighthouse Support artists using digital technology & help people succeed in the creative & cultural industries.

Lighthouse is a Brighton-based arts charity that supports artists who use digital technology in their work and helps people find routes into and succeed within the creative and cultural industries. From our central Brighton venues, we offer education and talent development programmes, commission artists to make and present new work, and produce exhibitions, talks and residencies. We have two key

talent development programmes for underrepresented young creatives - Lighthouse Young Creatives and Future Creative Leaders. In 2024 we opened the Lighthouse Project Space, Brighton’s first public, youth-led art space. It provides young creatives with a dynamic, multipurpose space to produce, create, perform, showcase and collaborate on artistic projects.

This week, we gathered at for our annual LYC Career Lunch, where past Lighthouse Young Creatives and Lighthouse staff members came together to share stories and advice with our new LYC cohort. There was a lot of laughter, plus some incredible vegan sushi burritos from 🌯💚

Amber ( LYC alum from 2023–24 ) joined us to share their journey since the programme, their art, and how their time on LYC has shaped the creative opportunities they’ve pursued since.

We also talked about what we wish we’d known at 18 when starting out in the creative world 👇
💬 Know your rights and find people who will advocate for you.
💬 Do the work that makes you happy. Passion projects matter.
💬 Be ready to learn, to risk, and to face rejection (it’s part of the process!).
💬 Go to creative socials, network, and apply for things that feel right for you.
💬 Ask questions. No one really knows what they’re doing.
💬 And most importantly: create, connect, and keep going.

The creative path is never a straight line, but spaces like these remind us that we’re all walking it together. 💫

Today the Lighthouse team and mentors hosted a careers lunch with the Lighthouse Young Creatives (LYC) and invited previous LYC alumni at The Rose Hill. This is a yearly tradition where LYC gets to meet the team and find out how our career paths have shaped the Lighthouse staff and mentors.

🌯 Our delicious lunch was from Happy Makii who provided tasty and healthy gluten-free vegan sushi burritos with sides of popcorn cauliflower, YUM!!!

Thank you, Happy Maki!

Thank you to everyone who came along to our first Lighthouse Townhall last Saturday.

It was an energising afternoon of listening, sharing, and building together. We discussed what we value as individuals and as a creative community as a whole, and how our needs can be met collectively in our city.

The Townhall is about returning to community roots. A moment to anchor, to dream, and to create pathways forward, together.

✨Keep your eye out for the next one.

In May 2025, Lighthouse’s Future Creative Leaders (FCL): Fez, Sami, Lucia, Levvy, Dred and Elsa, unveiled We, The Change at the Lighthouse Project Space. Running from 1–18 May as part of Brighton Festival 2025, this youth-led exhibition, built in collaboration with partners and peers, pulsed with innovation, social commentary, and unapologetic imagination.

From the moment you stepped inside, the atmosphere felt different. This exhibition was a living, breathing experiment: a place where art collided with activism, where questions were valued as much as answers, and where the voices of young people commanded centre stage.

The exhibition’s strength lay in its refusal to separate the personal from the political. Dred’s reimagined bedroom, the satirical Brighton beach, the council bin of feelings, and the brown water cooler all revealed the ways lived experience collides with civic issues.

💥Alongside the exhibition, two powerful events curated by the FCL deepened the programme’s impact. Grime echoed through the Project Space as eott.uk hosted a rap cypher fused with dialogue on masculinity and mental health. Through images, film, and live performance, Dreddaa invited audiences into his personal world with Dred Presents: Long Story Short – The Experience.

The vision of We, The Change didn’t stop at the walls of Lighthouse Project space. Partnering with BUILDHOLLYWOOD, our FCL carried their ideas onto Brighton’s billboards with provocative questions and bold statements. It is estimated that the billboard campaign would have been seen by over 850,000 members of the public in April this year.

🎊 Great news! Our Creative Communities Producer, Bobby Brown, has been awarded an Innovate UK Future Leaders Fellowship to launch a 4-year nationwide programme, building on our Future Creative Leaders work: Pathways Not Projects.

Pathways Not Projects extends our Future Creative Leaders programme into a nationwide endeavour. It will create long-term pathways for young people from marginalised backgrounds to lead in the creative industries, not just take part.

Over the next 4 years, Pathways Not Projects will:
- Expand Future Creative Leaders into a national movement
- Build youth steering groups in institutions
- Launch a digital platform to amplify community voices

At the heart of this fellowship is Bobby Brown, a cultural innovator & trailblazer reshaping leadership. His bold vision: shift power, centre lived experience, and design a creative future that belongs to everyone. This is a landmark opportunity for Bobby's work to go national. We are very proud.

“This is about shifting the balance of power permanently and ensuring the next generation of creative leaders has the space and support they deserve to thrive. By centring lived experience, ethical storytelling, and inclusivity, we can build a brighter future where young people are empowered to lead.” Bobby Brown

Lighthouse is one of a small number of recipients of this fellowship, not based in a major university. Being selected alongside world-class institutions is an incredible endorsement of Bobby's leadership and Lighthouse's track record in cultural innovation.

Pathways Not Projects builds on Lighthouse's legacy and Future Creative Leaders to become a 4-year nationwide endeavour. This is a huge opportunity for Lighthouse & Bobby, and we invite collaborators who share our vision to join us.
