JOY is Fraser’s most ambitious video project to date; a three-part collection documenting the best of his work from the last seven years, alongside never-before-seen material.
Originally conceived as the follow-up to OPUS, the project was cancelled last year because there was simply too much material for a single release. JOY is the answer. The complete project is now divided into three separate parts, released three months apart.
Each part will contain approximately six hours of video content, including full performances, detailed explanations, an exclusive interview exploring the thinking behind the material, and previously unreleased work. Across the complete series, Fraser presents some of his most innovative prop-less methodology alongside groundbreaking work with playing cards, including novel, impossible-looking effects built around his distinctive hands-off approach.
Each part is priced at the same fixed amount and will be supplied on a physical flash drive, with the complete six hours of video content for that part included directly on the drive itself.
JOY Part One is now open for pre-order and is expected to ship on 1st December. Those who pre-order will also receive early access to a selection of videos, sent progressively as Fraser compiles and completes the project throughout the pre-order window.
The three parts will ultimately form a complete record of seven years of development, experimentation and new thinking since the original OPUS.
If you have followed Fraser’s work over the years, you will already know the level of thinking behind this material. JOY captures a body of work from a creator operating at the cutting edge of the prop-less genre, continually pushing forward what is possible within the art form.
Here is a selection of effects that will appear in the first part of the video project. The first two feature entirely new methods.
NAME OR WORD GUESS is designed to be an extremely fast, prop-less version of MOOL with no force and virtually no process. The spectator simply jumps mentally through the letters of the alphabet as many times as they wish.
OPEN PREDICTION begins with the first spectator shuffling the deck and keeping hold of it throughout. A second spectator then freely names any card. From that moment on, the performer never needs to touch the deck again, yet the first spectator is somehow able to locate the freely named card, seemingly guided by nothing more than their own intuition.
OBSCURA DATE OF BIRTH allows the performer to secretly obtain a spectator’s exact date of birth and star sign, entirely prop-less, using nothing more than words. Also included is an updated handling that simplifies the mental process for the performer.
WHISPER CODE allows you to effortlessly code information to an assistant, whether close-up or on stage, using natural language and ordinary gestures. The system is so simple that it can be learned in seconds and even taught to a spectator on the fly, or communicated in nothing more than a whisper.
PARSE THOUGHT OF CARD begins with a spectator shuffling the deck multiple times before spreading through the cards and merely thinking of one. They close the deck and shuffle again as many times as they wish. Without ever needing to return to the deck, the performer can instantly identify the thought-of card with no fishing required. In fact, the card can even be predicted ahead of time. This project also includes additional work that was not originally tipped in the book, allowing the spectator to riffle shuffle as well as overhand shuffle the deck multiple times.
ONE AHEAD MENDEZ allows the performer to intuitively reveal two pieces of information through a structured sequence that makes sense theatrically and feels natural in performance.
OBVERSE uses a couple of lines of clever scripting that allows you to always successfully guess three rounds in the game of which hand?
Naturally, there will be even more ideas, subtleties, and additional work taught as each of these effects is explored in full.
